So I was meandering around myspace when I stumbled upon a group and profile by the name of La Mafia Verde - Seattle MLS. They claim to be a supporters club composed of people from many backgrounds and regular Americans too. The site says that they are not, nor have they been, Sounders supporters and are going to create a European style supporters section at Qwest for our MLS side.
While I think its a cool name, they better hope that green is the predominant color.
Anybody heard of this group before?
Could this be anything from the FO?
A peanut is neither a pea nor a nut. Discuss.

Yeah there was a thread about this over on goalseattle.
ECS are aware of this, but are taking a wait and see approach to see if this actually pans out into something.
Hey, I hope the non-USL ppl get involved... either with us or as another group who wants to work together. Time's a wasting though so if they want to get numbers and atmosphere comparable to what Toronto did last year (and this coming season with apprarently 1500-2000 travelling to Columbus for the opener), they'd better get a move on.

God bless Toronto FC. What a great inclusion they were to MLS.
Within the loud section of fans in Toronto, there used to be cliques, very often based on national origin. There's a very large Italian community in Toronto for example, as well as an Eastern-Europe community, and a massive section of English, Irish and Scottish supporters, and I understand the Jamaican community has also adopted Toronto FC somewhat. In my day, the English/Irish supporters generally coalesced at a serious of pubs called the "Duke of <>". There were a few of them, and they offered up English and Irish beers, but were comfortable in space and atmosphere. I really believe those establishments really helped forge the core of Toronto's most vocal fans back in the day.
Anyway, the development of Toronto's fans is fascinating, and I simply must experience again, the next time I am back in Toronto.
I think Seattle could develop something similar in time, especially having different segments of supporter groups that might develop, working together, sitting in close proximity and generally sharing one another's songs and rituals.
One of the great thrills of Seattle MLS will be watching that all develop, watching more and more fans find this board, and seeing soccer swell to a level, that our local media are forced to pay attention. And yes, I believe all that can happen.

Nope, and it's a shame that they can't be bothered to support the Championship winning side that will be playing in 2008.

I've been told that the original Mafia Verde are from Bolivia.
I will be interested in meeting them at the Mexico - China match next month.

I don't know about Mafia Verde, but Immortal Fury is gonna be sick. Check our Forum (http://immortalfury.mybb3.org/). Also got a group on Facebook. We model ourselves after the great Brasilian torcidas...none of this hooligan business. Check it out!

Right on.
The more the merrier.
I do suggest that if the Sounders FO are going to put all of the active, standing supporters in the GA section behind the south goal, that we get together and plan some things out.
We could do some great song/chant exchanges and tifo displays.

I strongly urge all groups to work together, and *eventually* coalesce into a central organization.
I know there are politics that get in the way of complete unity, but a very fractured group of hardcore fans can really diminish the community.
Even neutral observers (like me) seem to get sucked into the fragments if they become competitive, simply by association.
Thankfully, everything I've read here suggests all groups will cooperate and work with one another, which in time could lead to full-fledged unity and branding, which personally, I'd really like to see.
I've seen both the best and worst of a splintered community, and really believe the best will happen here.
Sometimes I find supporters group are far too keen and focused on pure gorilla chest-thumping. Even the word "ultra" kind of makes me giggle, like it is straight out of a comic book. What I like about ECS (personally) is they make it clear that women, families and quieter fans are welcome too, (at least they do on their website) something some supporters groups go out of their way to repel.
And the idea that a man with wife and child at a match is somehow a "weaker" fan, I think hurt soccer as a whole in North America.
Also names like "Immortal Fury" and "Mafia Verde" are so full of machismo they sound hollow to me, but that's just personal taste. None the less, they will likely produce incredible fans, and incredible spectacle at the matches, so I should reserve judgment on them, and see what they came up with.
For what it is worth though, I have more respect for simpler, cleaner names like Emerald City Supporters than "The Super Duper Killahs".
At some point in the late 80's and early 90's, some North American fans got into their head, that to be a "real" fan, you had to act like a confetti tossing Italian supporters group. I don't mind this - at all - except that at times it sometimes had the same general aura/feeling as gang-hood, and it was not always about inclusion, but often about exclusion - and elitism.
I don't think any group here is in danger of that, but I do want to warn you against that kind of deterioration. By all means, group up, build giant banners and launch streamers (although I confess I cringe when I see that stuff littering the pitch during a match, especially when it endangers players). However if I ever seen any group out there, actively playing politics, and trying to exclude and judge others based on what they wear, or what "group" they belong to, I'll be very sad.
Because, I've seen that before and it can ruin a community. Thankfully, threads like this will ensure that will never happen.
My two cents on the whole issue, with respect to all groups. Understand my opinion derives from having seen competing groups squabble, and I am the first to admit this likely will not happen here.

Thanks...
We only ask that if they are not an "active supporter" that they not take up a spot in the front row.
We would like our most fanatic members in those spots.
We also think it is better for the families (kids) to stand further back in the section.
Also, you don't even have to be in the supporters section to be in the ECS.
We would like to get as many people in that area as we can, but we also understand that not everyone wants to support the team in that manner.
These people should be able to be apart of the ECS.

I have never seen confetti or streamers endanger a player.:D

I checked out your forums, are many of your members of Brazilian descent?

Thanks for the question. I would say a majority of the group has found common ground in appreciation, respect and love of the Brasilian game and its fans, although we do have members w/ Brasilian heritage and others who have lived in or traveled to the country. Overall, it's about celebration of the game, and Brasilians do it well.
Fuzzy, didn't mean to step on any toes there w/ the 'hooligan' comment, it derives directly from the Mafia Verde myspace page where they describe themselves by referencing "drinking...cursing...being a general menace." Perhaps I got the wrong impression from the hooded figure in their logo as well. Sorry for the blanket statement.
To the gentleman referring to the hollow name, perhaps the following statement might help: What is Immortal Fury? Fury is for the torrent of furious and fervent support we give our team. Immortal is for the way our undying love of our team transcends time and place.
Hope this helps. Thanks! (apologies for the long post)

Fuzzy is an E.C.S. Ultra, not Mafia Verde.
He was responding to the posts on your forum concerning the E.C.S.
Just thought I would clear that up.

Fury... good to see you guys organizing a group, more the merrier.
Briefly poked around your boards... and it seems a couple of ppl claim "run-ins" with ECS as though we were hooligans or something. Don't know what that's all about as we've never started fights at matches or stupid shit like that. We're not an English "firm" or anything like that at all.
I wasn't at the Mexico-China game, but I did hear about ppl flipping the bird and whatnot... after beers were thrown from behind and we had ppl spit on from behind as well. Just thought I'd put that out there to establish some context. We don't go around flipping random ppl off for no reason.
We're all going to be supporting the same club, so no reason we shouldn't at least get along and have a basic level of "working together for a common goal", although I'm sure you guys will have your own style and whatnot... which is cool with us.
This is a major reason why I didn't bother to pay a bunch of money as it's happened to me repeatedly when at USA matches. I only bother with it if its a really big match like WCQ now :D
Anyway, good luck with your group and hope to see you guys next season!

Re: Seattle Away May 10th [R]
Reply #58 - Today at 12:55am Quote Man, I just have to say, ******** Shittle.
I didn't ride the bus because it's Mother's Day weekend and I decided to spend it with Mom while seeing the Timbers in Seattle. She lives on Bainbridge so I rode the ferry over, ran into a few poddites so I had some freindly jabs with scarves flying. Seemed like all was well. During the match I think the security was cool, and I even had some cool moments with the Shittle fans.
Well, on the way home, we ran into some flounders fans with scrves and we had what I thought would be a freindly exchange. They bitched and I said "well it's all good an d friendly because we had a draw." But on the way off the ferry one f*ckin poddite kept kicking my feet. I asked him twice to stop, and even waited to let him pass by. I shook a flounder fan's hand and told him that we respected the pod and I'd welcome him and defend him at any Portland match. Then, with no warning, I was jumped and the Sounders fans and we started throwing punches and kicks. I got into my Mom's car on Mothers day weekend with a bloody face and a sore fist. I felt so Embarrassed; but it wasn't even my fault.
I can't believe I even tried to be egalitarian and friendly with them. Those of you that know me, know I'm not a hooligan and I'm really not aggressive at matches. I can't believe how they embarassed me in front of my own Mom with a bloody face and shirt.
******** the Pod. I know I hurt these ********ers faces but I wish I wish I hadn't quit before I hurt them a whole lot more.
******** Shittle. I want my Blood back.
