It has been talked about. But it looks more and more like it is going to happen. I think I'd go to this game....

it says they would play Mexico on the 4th and the US 4 days later. so that would mean the game would be on June 8th.

From the FIFA website:
Jamaica Argentina
31/05/2008 LONDON Friendly
Hungary Argentina
04/06/2008 BUDAPEST Friendly
So Argentina already has 2 games in Europe right before our supposed encounter, one of which is the same date as their "Mexico" game. Given their tremendous depth, we could be seeing their B team, which is really an alternate A team, their domestic league team, or their olympic team. Even if we do not get their best, it should still be one hell of a challange. That olympic team could have players like Aguero, Messi, Gago, Riquilme and Mascherano.

Jamaica and Hungary matches will both be suspended(probably postponed until later months) the team will gather in Los Angeles the team will consist only of european club's players, which means everybody of the usual but Riquelme, Orión, Denis, Ibarra, Escudero, and others.

That is so true, I'm very excited that this might be the schedule. Win lose or draw it can only be a good thing for US soccer (especially the games on european soil)...

Importantly, they link to the Argentina FA website that says it's a done deal (and post a translated version).
Good news. Should be a great game and a great atmosphere.

Yeah but he made the face because the stadium isn't located in New York. It is in New Jersey...and you said NY. Not really a big deal though.
Anyway, USSoccer.com needs to report this and let me know when tickets go on sale so I can be there :)
EDIT - Just found this link (it is in Spanish)....according to it the game will be at Giants Stadium on the 8th. I am so going. :)

What is the turf situation with the Meadowlands. Do they have grass until the NFL starts. If so when is it installed? I would hate to see the game marred by either a plastic pitch (in which case I doubt Argentina would even play) or a just installed grass field that will have the players constantly slipping and the ball doing God knows what.

Don't worry, the USSF will report the game sometime between 24-48 hours after the opening kickoff.

They had natural grass installed for a friendly between Ireland and Ecuador in May of last year just 4 days after the Red Bulls played the Crew on the carpet. If they decide to use it, which I really hope they do, it can be installed quickly.

Yeah, I myself might consider heading down to the Meadowlands for this one. Looks like a good fixture and we're playing some tough friendlies.

I headed to Chicago last year for the Brazil match. Not only do you get to see the United States play, but you get to see quality opponents with lots of big names which is great too. If you follow the sport, then it probably will be the same as any game. But these type of games get the not so knowledgable fans to attend the game due to the attraction of the big names, thus creating a more electric atmosphere at the stadium. :)
