And even his own manager Arsene Wenger admitted the youngster, a shock pick by Sven Goran Eriksson for England’s 2006 World Cup squad, had not developed as quickly as he would like.

But Gallas’ criticism of the prospect is on another level altogether.

Speaking to GQ magazine, Gallas said: “I think Theo Walcott can be the new Wayne Rooney but he has to change his style of play.

“He must work hard in training because everyone knows where he will run with the ball.

“He goes on his right foot — so he must work to come on the inside on his left foot.

“He must be less predictable and more focused. He can also take too long on the ball.”

Asked if Walcott listens to his advice, Gallas replied: “I hope for him he does because he has great potential.”

Former Chelsea star Gallas, 30, insisted Arsenal’s bright young things should take notice when men of his experience offer words of wisdom.

gallas is right.

what a double standard we have; we want our athletes to speak their mind, then are critical of them. when athletes toe the company line and have no opinion, we are critical of them for not being honest. annoying.

walcott is so predictable, imo.

I think this needs to be said at training, not to a newspaper.

I think they can have opinions about stuff, just not other players and what they should do, at least not to the newspapers.

GQ Magazine isn't a newspaper. But i'm still wondering if Gallas revealed what kind of hair gel he uses in his fauxhawk.

Hopefully not "all-natural".

i hope he didnt say what he is thinking to the media before he spoke to walcott personally. i know i would get ticked if my captain didnt consult me first. im sure they had a talk beforehand though

Im mixed about this, at least he didn't say Walcott isnt progressing and just left it at that, he told him how to improve. I get incredibly angry when people tell me that i need to change but don't tell me how to do that. However, I hope Gallas is listening to criticism of himself from others after having somewhat of a child's tantrum. And why does this need to be said to a magazine? It should be left on the training ground. Maybe it was already said and Walcott wasn't listening so he trys to say it again through public means...

They asked him a question, he answered. Everything he said was nice, they turned it into criticism.
