View Full Version : People who cry about soccer coverage (or lack of)

Why do soccer fans constantly cry about the lack of coverage of the sport? If you love this game then you don't have to try to convince others why it is so great. Love it for what it is to you and let it go. I have been involved in multiple aspects of this game for over 33 years. I too love this game and always will, however, I can't stand listening to the CONSTANT whining. Imagine how non-soccer people must feel having to hear that crap.
I certainly don't lend an ear when the N.O.W. is on the news complaining about the poor treatment of members from their organization and I don't want to hear from the ACLU or the (fill-in name) political/social group that didn't get a fair shot and I don't want to hear from Kobe lovers when he is convicted "just because he is black."
We do a disservice to our game when we complain. In this case, the squeaky wheel will not get the grease.............
Just a thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good point. Try being a squash fan. I have to buy DVDs of matches at $40 a pop if I want to watch pros play.

The soccer fans who whine and cry the most are usually the ones who don't follow any other sport in America. That's why they're incapable of realizing the simple truth about soccer in the US......it's not as popular as the other sports!!! When it gets more popular, it will then get more coverage. And by the way, soccer gets more coverage than many other sports such as rugby, squash you name it. We got it better than those folks.

The truth about sports in the US is that the majority of them that are on tv are redneck sports and the reason that we soccer fans whine is because we have to watch crap like nascar or bass fishing instead of soccer. In all honesty neither of the previously mentioned sports are really even sports. How athletic do you have to be to catch a darn fish?

I think part of the frustration comes from not being able to see the national team play, or the U-17s, etc., when there are hundreds of channels just begging for content.
Other than that, I mostly agree with the premise of your post, cougar. As long as soccer fans aren't making news by selling out MLS stadiums, we can't expect the networks to be beating down our doors.

That's something the Eurosnobs just don't understand.

Yep. In the cut-throat business world, you gots to earn your keep. :(
Personally, I don't understand why MLS isn't averaging 25,000/match. If they were, we'd have coverage in every outlet, you can be sure.
I go to Earthquakes games. I have a great time just about every time. If you're used to watching any level of organized soccer in the US, including youth travel teams or NCAA, you have to be impressed. So the product itself is pretty good. I've had a number of European friends tell me that they're impressed, even if it's not the quality of the Euro leagues.
The weather is almost always great. The game-day atmosphere is pretty cool. Seriously, in spite of all the attendence problems the Quakes have, you can feel the buzz in the crowd outside the stadium and walking to your seats.
The food is great. The stadium, while it doesn't have an ideal-size pitch, is cool. It has lots of character.
I get there early and tailgate along with what seems to be about a thousand other tailgaters. Everyone's having a great time. Families. Beer drinkers. Latinos. Youth league folks. All types.
And yet, the crowds are stuck in the 8-9000 range.
You have to conclude that the marketing by the league is ineffective. (In San Jose, until a month or so ago, it was practically non-existent.) And until it changes, we're not going to have or deserve the coverage we'd all like.

Take note soccer fans...about 10 years ago, other than the Daytona 500 and maybe a few other races, you wouldn't see many other races on TV. NASCAR wasn't nearly as popular as it is now and it has been around for, what, 50 years? It took time and marketing savvy to build that entity. The same will happen for soccer.
Besides, do we really want to invite some of the soccer naysayers inside our little world?

You know, I've always thought that this was a bit of a problem. There's an insular attitude that comes from many MLS-only fans. It's as if they enjoy being part of some small band of American soccer cultists, and the last thing they want is for their world to be invaded by "outsiders." It's manifested in their intense dislike of so-called "Eurosnobs."
Frankly, despite what they tend to say, the last thing I believe many MLS fans want is for "Eurosnobs" to begin filling up the stadiums. God forbid some people with a greater knowledge of soccer start showing up at the games. They'll be accused of taking over. You'll begin hearing stupidity like "Who the hell do they think they are? We've been here since 1996. Get lost! Go back to watching your EPL matches in bars on Saturday mornings and leave us and OUR league alone."
I also have my doubts about how soccer "naysayers" would be treated if they eventually saw the light and became ardent MLS fans. Notice how a "newbie" is treated on these boards, for example. The "present at the creation" bunch just love jumping all over them and acting superior. I guess it's considered fun by some people to drive folks off the boards and out of the stadiums.
This is not an indictment against all MLS fans. But let's not deny there are those with this kind of attitude.

Whip. You are crying. You cried in your post about having to watch timber cutting. That is exactly the attitude that non-soccer people have when they see soccer on their screen instead of ________(fill in name of favorite show). There is plenty of soccer to be seen from various media outlets. Watch what you like and leave others alone to do the same. If you don't feel you get enough of what you want to watch, then go buy a video and watch it over and over again. If you are a soccer lover like me, you are involved in the game for various reasons. But please everyone.......STOP THE WHINING!!!!!! You have all heard the saying... Play hard or go home. Well I say.....Love soccer and SHUT_UP!!!!!

Grow up.
If you are digruntled at the coverage on TV, try going to the actual game. That is where the fun is! It does not matter if it is MLS, A-League, PDL, Youth---go. GO. Be a TRUE SOCCER FAN.
There is nothing like the real thing!
Life is a sport. Kudos to those who can embrace their sport of choice. They are not wrong-they are just different.
There are just so many minutes in a day, and tv coverage cannot cover all that is considered sport.
I do not have anything against people watching soccer on tv. Do you need tube soccer for the enjoyment of staying at home, yelling at the tv, gorging yourself, etc?

100% correct. Right on target. Those words are exactly what I feel about some MLS/USA fans. There may be some "eurosnobs" but there certainly are "MLSsnobs". Complain, complain, complain about Americans not getting into soccer but when new fans show up......"Oh no!!!! There goes the neighborhood".

Don't know if you call this whinning, but I call my cable company about every 3-4 months to ask them to carry PAX tv. So I can watch the WUSA. So far nothing. I do go to games but have to stick to what is drivable, so I see MLS, W-league, PDL, but no WUSA.

I get PAX by turning my tv set to antenna, instead of cable. Give it atry.

So are you saying Eurosnobs have a "greater knowledge" of soccer than MLS fans?
Just curious.

When the NFL started in 1924 (I'm pretty sure that's the year), most people laughed it off. It took time, same with racing. Everyone has good points. Its going to take time before the stadiums are filled and we get good coverage.
I must say though, I get pissed when I flip on ESPN and I see Log climbing, or World's Strongest Man competition from 1999, especially since that's what they'll be showing now instead of the Champions League. Now I follow a lot of sports, other than baseball, so boring! But I can't stomach some of the stuff shown on there.
