FIFA makes it official: Donovan US scoring leader
Landon Donovan became the U.S. career scoring leader Friday, one month after scoring the goal that broke a tie with Eric Wynalda.
FIFA, soccer’s governing body, said Friday it had recognized the United States’ 3-1 victory over Denmark on Jan. 20, 2007, as a full “A” international game. Donovan converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute of the Denmark match 13 months ago, but before Friday FIFA had not counted the game—or the goal.

Gotta give credit where credit is due-- congrats to LanDo. He's really going to push his scoring record to new heights. Pretty soon, he may have more international goals than hairs left on his head . . . :p

Are there other players out there who lead their national teams in both goals and assists? Seems kind of rare, but they may be a dime a dozen for all I know. Plus the fact that he's only played forward about half the time in his career, that's pretty impressive. [And no, I haven't actually done the research to know if it's really only 1/2 of his minutes - I'm sure someone will and will correct my wild speculation. :)]
Not to open a can of worms here, but I do hope he gets moved back to his more natural (best, IMO) position: as the 2nd, or off, withdrawn, forward.

Good news for Kenny Cooper, too. He gets to keep his lone international goal, too.

You wouldn't happen to know who has that historic ball now, would you - Cooper himself, or perhaps the Hall of Fame?
I ask because when I watched (from abroad*) the international highlights coverage of the recent US v. Sweden match, it was mostly LD's pre-PK routine and his post-PK ball grab, and it fell to me to defend LD from ridicule.
Fortunately, before I left the US I had taken the precaution of committing all of SK's LD-posts to memory, so I had plenty of amunition.

and Rossi. ;)
Oh yeah I forgot he was Italian. What about Giuseppe Franco instead?! At least he'd have more hairs on his heat than international goals with all that procede he uses!

when does donovan retire.....after 2014 internationally...
the number donovan will put is will be huge...
while i like ALTIDORE, i don't see him playing as many matches as DONOVAN, and getting past 50 is quite an achievement

LD has been taking some shots at Wynalda in the press. I wonder if he's feeling bad now that Eric has been canned by ESPN (http://http://sidelineviews.blogspot.com/2008/03/eric-is-good-sport.html).

wynalda was either very good doing matches or very bad...
at times he was unlistenable, but at other times he ahd the insight you want from someone who played the game ...
hopkins is TOP notch, the more of him the better
