For a second I thought "Radio- Cuba Gooding Jr." was the title of the movie, and I was thinking "Radio Free Cuba Gooding Jr." would have been a much better title.
from imdb.com, a synopsis:
This is the decades-long story of the relationship between a prominent high school football coach (Ed Harris) in a small South Carolina town and the illiterate, mentally-challenged man nicknamed Radio (Gooding) whom he mentors, who before that had always been the target of jokes and teasing by the community. Although their friendship raises some eyebrows at first, Radio's growth under the coach's guidance ultimately inspires the local townsfolk, from 1964 when he first starts helping the Hanna Yellow Jackets football team, through a 38+ career with the school that continues today (2002), including tenures as the head cheerleader, assistant coach and team manager.
Yeah, that does sound dumb.

Ever since Dustin Hoffman got an Oscar for "Rainman", playing a mentally handicapped character has been the way to get Oscar nominations or just being taken seriously as an actor. And if any actor needs to be taken seriously right now, it's Cuba ("Boat Trip", "Snow Dogs).
But yeah, the movie looks silly. There's a short SI article about this Radio guy from a couple of years back - it'll take a lot shorter than 2 hours to read and won't cost you the price of admission.
