Seems like it's now dealt with if mlsnet.com has a story. Lousy article, perhaps intentionally so. He travelled to a foreign country and saw a game -- that's nothing of concern. It doesn't say what else happended that actually caused the problems -- meet with team officials, train, ???. What were the press accounts & pictures? Anybody know?

It's not to big of a deal but I guess it couldn't have killed him to tell this guys (Preki,Bob, etc.)before meeting with Tel-Aviv officials .

isn't this more of an MLS story than a US men's?

If I'm under contract with my employer, and I decide to use my vacation time to set up an informational interview with a different corporation, of course I wouldn't tell my employer about it. If the news somehow got back to my employer, they would probably inquire why I was looking, they may be disappointed that I went to someone else -- even if just to look, but they'd probably understand that this is simply what people do. And then we'd have a talk about whether I was enjoying my current gig or whether I wanted out of my contract to pursue something else.

This is all totally understandable and lacking in controversy to me.

How is JB's situation any different? Seems like either the media is blowing this out of proportion, or Preki and Chivas USA have unreasonably high opinions of themselves. But JB is doing what anyone does when they actively manage their career.

In fact, I am currently approx 90 minutes away from a talk with HR of my own. Depending on how much of my emails they have secretly read, they may or may not be aware that I have talked with other potential employers over the past couple weeks. Wish me luck!

He's a professional athlete under contract and you're not. That's how it's different.

If he pissed off Preki... big deal, any club in MLS would gladly take him.

However, if he pissed of Bradley that's a whole other thing. I'd like to hear what Bradley has to say to the media about what he said to Bornstein. Probably the usual vague stuff, but we'd at least get an idea of how deep the shit that Bornstein is in right now is.

Bob Bradley doesn't seem like the type of guy to hold grudges. Neither does Preki.

And neither can really afford to because like it or not Bornstein is the best left back we have.

Nice interesting little article.

But not a big deal.

Doubt we have the full story -- or ever will -- but I can't for the life of me see why Bob Bradley felt the need to get involved with this.

i agree ... I don't see why this is a US men's story.

Maybe:

"Don't play in Israel it's no better and could be worse than MLS"

"Don't screw over Chivas, without them you'd probably be playing striker in USL right now"

correct me if I'm wrong but how often does professional players trial or visit other clubs on vacation? I think this may be more about doing things professionally. No clubs wants to find this out on the internet.

I'm not going to shed any tears for the sweatshop of professional soccer leagues when one of its captives decides to undermine the way they'd like to do things.

That's sort of my point, diablo. Why should career management be any different for pro athletes under contract versus corporate employees under contract? Seems like a meaningless distinction to me.

Well, #1 your corporate contract is day to day. Either side can end it tomorrow. JB's has a fixed length to it.

Well, it sounds as if Bornstein was not actually looking to sign with Maccabi Tel Aviv, but simply asked to train with them for the time he was in Israel...? That's my interpretation of the MLSNet article and the previous Israeli rumors. Sure, he should have informed Chivas about it beforehand, but, hey, in the end he was just staying in shape while training with reasonably good players.

If he called it "window shopping" and he wanted to see "what kind of options were out there," I'd say it wasn't quite that innocent.

And if Bornstein suffers a career ending injury when on this innocent training venture, who pays?

you're in israel training, i suspect the chances of being at the wrong place at the wrong time is more problematic than getting a career injury training...

having a leg blown off is more likely.

add in he now has military obligations there
