A new spinoff in the works at Sci Fi Channel will reveal what happened on planet Caprica 50 years before "Battlestar Galactica."

Sci Fi has OK'd the production of a two-hour prequel pilot for the new, proposed series, titled simply "Caprica," the cable channel has announced.

As "Galactica" fans well know, that series began when Caprica was destroyed. The new series will follow "two rival families -- the Greystones and the Adamas -- as they grow, compete and thrive in the vibrant world of the 12 Colonies," an announcement from Sci Fi said. "Enmeshed in the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons, the two houses go toe-to-toe," the statement said.

Production on the pilot is scheduled for this spring. Casting was not announced for the project, which has reportedly been kicking around at Sci Fi since 2006.

"We couldn't be more excited to see this long-anticipated project get off the ground," said Mark Stern, Sci Fi's executive vice president of original programming.
