I remember someone posting something about the Revs not having roster protected players that have contributed to the team (or something like that). So I did a little looking.
I looked at the P-40s and Developmental players for each team and recorded the total minutes played and goals and assists contributed by those players.

Hopefully we'll have these guys for many years.

Interesting how the 2 teams with the fewest minutes, Crew and Revs, are the ones struggling the most the past 2 months.

And all those folks saying that draft picks aren't worth squat. Look at all the teams with developmental players ...

Great piece of research Coach!

To get the full impact of these figures, say this to yourself:
"The Metros have gotten thirty-seven times more minutes out of their non-roster players than the Revolution".

Better yet, just stick your finger in your eye 37 times ...

The above set of stats got me thinking about teams' benches in general, so I took the list from MLSNet at 2003 Regular Season League Stats and scratched out the 11 players from each team that started the most games. This isn't a perfect way of determining the teams preferred starting line up, but it's pretty close in most cases. Noteable exceptions include our own Cancela, Bocanegra and Convey ending up in the non-starters group.

Anyway, make of it what you will.

This is a total of minutes played, goals and assists contributed by players who are not one of the 11 team members with the most starts on the team.

If I had to make something of this, I would say it is a positive that we are getting good production off "the bench" (if not from our roster exempt players). The stats represent the season so far and include (for the Revs) Noonan, Harris, Hernandez, Cancela, Vazquez, both Kantes, Leonard, Jason Moore, Reis and Singer.

Well, gotta part company with you there Coach... When you consider that Noonan and Harris alone accounted for all of the bench goals (4) and seven of the eleven assists...well.

It also ignores defensive stats (which it has to, because there really are none).
But if you've watched the Fire and Metros a few times, you know that the young guys have played a key role defensively for these teams (every time I watch the Metros, that Argentinian kid seems to be playing central defense).

The Revs have been broken down in the last 10 games because they had no defensive subs, and their midfield ran out of gas. Very pointedly, I don't think Kante, Marshall, Vazquez, J. Moore, Harris, or even Noonan (who really doesn't have much of a defensive game) have helped much in this regard.

Just my opinion...

Mine too. We have a few "offensive" options off the bench, but not much defensively, particularly in the midfield (which is the better place to use defensive subs).

I guess this is crying over spilled milk ...

Hernandez was the key to this team.

Thinking that Cullen could handle the job as the defensive midfielder without another defensive partner was ignorant of the facts, and wishful at best.

Picking up Cancela after getting Vasquez was planning for next season, or just ignoring the deficiencies of our defense and hoping they wouldn't be exploited.

Our inexpensive pickup (Ja. Moore), and our expensive pickup (Joe-Max Moore) have been disapointments.

Our defense is plagued by poor passing, limited speed, and as far as I can tell, no true leader. If you add an invisible defensive midfielder, you're doomed.

Don't blame Noonan, he's the new kid who should still be on the bench.
