I misread the title of this thread, and thought it refered to proposals to stage the carling cup final in the usa. thiis got me to thinking, that might not be a bad idea in prionciple. the epl are looking at ways to play some games abroad, with real problems over the logistics of playing one off league fixtures and adding to the calendar. surely it would be a better idea, even if just at the start, to tamper with a lesser important competition first. the fact is that the league cup is not a traditional tournament anyway, started as it was in the late 60s as a purely financial money spinner for clubs who had been disadvantaged with lower gate receipts due to a decrease in the fixture list. it was motivated only by money, so where better to look when manipulating the current set of arrangements in search of greater profits/expanding audience. the fa cup and the league title have over 100 years each of existence and tampering with these is a much more sensitive subject. why not play league cup fixtures from the round of 16 onwards abroad. that would be 15 fixtures, most of which involved 2 premiership sides, in one off matches. there would be cup knockout exitement and no dead rubbers, which are very likely with these ridiculous '39th random' fixtures being proposed.

this would also make the league cup of real significance, which, despite the bigger clubs interest in the tourney these days, i find is still lacking in a big way.

anyway, i think its a very interesting idea, even if i havent covered all the important points: any thoughts?

The Carling Cup is run by the Football League and not the Premier League.

Why move abroad the only Carling Cup game guaranteed to sell out in England no matter who's playing? I doubt the yanks or koreans would come out to watch Bolton vs Middlesbrough.

Oh yeah I'm sure the Spurs fans would love this final being in America right now.

The League Cup Final, like any final, is a big day out for the fans and a reward for those season ticket holders who have followed their team all year. These fans would be a bit p1ssed off if the Final was in another country and they could not go. The whole pt of proposing a 39th game abroad was that the current fans would not have one of the existing 38 games taken away from them. They would still have 38 matches to attend but other fans abroad could see the extra one. Of course this led to balancing issues in the extra fixtures.

I dont' think you'd get that much agreement from Spurs and Chelsea fans on that today.

How about the Community Shield game outside of England? Move it around Asia and N America.

while i'm extremely against the "39th round abroad" ludicrious idea a neutral-ground carling cup sounds a bit more logical and practical

The whole point of moving games abroad is to make more money. There's no point in moving games abroad that are already sell outs.

Right, so you would deny an English fan's chance to go to Wembley?

The ultimate trip a fan can make?

No way.

Doesn't matter if it's the FA Cup, League Cup, Johnstone's Paint Trophy, FA Trophy, FA Vase, or playoffs. It's still a trip to Wembley, no matter how little the match means.
