I'd rather have Jansen over Lell any single day of the week. Lell is quality replacement, that's all he'll be at Bayern. Other clubs in Germany, definite starter.

It seems like MvB had to have said something because he started clapping even before the ref drew the first yellow, and did the Spanish Wave while the ref was turing and drawing the red. So he either didn't see the clapping [which means he's even dumber than we thought] and the linesman told the ref, or he thought it would be funny to be tricky and draw the second in dramatic fashion.

Nah, he wasn't clapping until after the card came out and raised his hands before the first, but he knew it was coming. I don't think that would have gotten him the 2nd yellow anyway. I think he had to have said something... and actually now after seeing the replay, I think it looks like he was saying something.

the replay doesn't look like he is saying anything, and if you actually read the reports, the 2nd yellow card (and thus the red) was for the sarcastic clapping. The referee never found out about the hand gesture until after, and he is currently being investigated for it.

An analysis of TV footage of the incident, just before the Dutch midfielder received a second yellow card for ironically applauding referee Lutz Wagner, shows the player making an obscene gesture, apparently in the direction of the match official. Wagner did not see nor punish the gesture, thus prompting the disciplinary committee to intervene. bayern website (http://www.fcbayern.t-home.de/en/news/news/2008/15275.php?fcb_sid=73b7ddfd285fbf7ecd7d7d9f82f31486)

To my eyes, he's definately saying something on that video.

and yet I don't see his lips moving, and no reports make mention of him saying anything, and he states he never said anything, and the ref states the card wasn't for saying anything.

We don't know what the ref said for certain those reports aren't always 100% accurate of what happens, and as for MvB, he says his little gesture wasn't even directed at the ref if we're to believe him, heh. Right before & after his face is obscurred by Lell & the ref, It definitely looks to me like his mouth is saying something.

Van Bommel's skill and tenacity are incomparable but his maturity and self-control are similar to some of my high school players. Yes he brings a lot to the table but how many times has he hurt the team with his antics? His absence from the Schalke match and possibly more could cost us the bundesliga! He KNEW it was Hamburg's throw-in and he accomplished absolutely nothing by walking away with the ball. That is an obvious attempt to delay the game. Hitzfeld needs to make him do exruciating exercise punishments in training for all of his episodes and the club should fine him.

This is the case with many great leading players (Effe, Cantona, Matthaeus etc) Its just in their character, it cannot be changed. It's part of their on-field personality and I believe why they are so effective as players and leaders.

Why not simply sell him and get a better player?:D

and I'd love to see how many quality players we could sign after we start selling off our players because of some undesirable personality traits. who will want to play for our team if we sell off players simply for not agreeing with the referees?
