View Full Version : One Foot Wonders

I wonder if any professional team has ever had as many one foot wonders (all lefties?) as DC United had on the field at one time or another on Saturday?
Etcheverry: Rarely if ever uses his right foot. Several opportunities to shoot this year passed up in an effort to get the ball on his left foot.
Convey: Almost as one-footed as Etcheverry. Wonder how, or if, this will affect him in England...
Eski: In true Etcheverry form, passed up a wide open shot from 18 on Saturday to try to get the ball on his left.
Q2: Perhaps not as pronounced, but still seems awfully hesitant to use that right foot.
Stoichkov: Probably the best right foot of the bunch, which I guess is saying something in itself.

I was thinking this same thing the other day. It's funny as I'm sinister footed myself, I can barely use my right to stand on.
Some would say I can barely use my left to stand on.

I'm curious why this is such an issue. Aren't right footed players just as hesitant to use their left foot or are they more likely to use either one to shoot?

I think his point was not just the left footedness, it just happens we have an unusual number of corrie footed ones, but given the demands of the modern game the number of truly one peg players we have. Most players will want to use their better foot, but should be able to get something out of the other one.

Gotta disagree about Convey though. He will shot right footed.
My little brother is "wrong" footed as well. I always make fun of him when we play pick-up. He will favor his left and I dare him to go right and call him "Marco".
Truth be told I have seen Marco use his right foot to score a goal. It was down there in front of me at the north end. I think it was back in '98. He had a ball roll across the box and the only way he was going to get the shot off was right footed, as a defender was coming full-bore at his left foot. Although he was staioned inside the goalie box so his shot traveled less than 6 yards. ;)

As a right footed player I shoot and play with my left foot just as often but you are right. It just seems more pronounced with left footed players.

I was very right foot when I was really young but as I steped up to play in the NCSL, Baltimore Beltway, and ODP as a youth player I felt I needed to learn to use both feet as a striker to be that much more of a threat and now I find myself scoring more with my left than my right even though I strike the ball equally with both feet.
Most players I know are right footed I even have a buddy that is left handed but a right footed player, with this I think you will tend to find more players that are right footed using both feet just becasue there are so many more out there as oppose to a smaller number of lefties.
The leftsided players also tend to get away with more onesided play because it is harder to defend against a leftie due to it being out of the norm and their bosy motions being "abnormal", it's kinda like the southpaw jinx in boxing.

I'm a righty, but I've found that i've got better aim with my left, especially for crosses and corners, but I've got tons more strenght in my right. So, if I need finess, I'll use left, if I need power, I use my right.
The funny thing about the lefties is that most lefties I know, are very limited with their rights and are extremely hesitant to touch the ball with their right.

I think part of the reason is that right footed players are frequently put on the left side due to a lack of left footed players, while the opposite is rarely true. (Current USMNT situation notwithstanding - I'm mostly talking about the recreational/youth situation)
Right footed players are challenged to learn to play the other side, while lefties are more likely to be stuck out left throughout their entire development.

You're probably not aware of this but Marco played plenty of futbol before he came to MLS. His right foot while not as good as his left did plenty of damage overseas.

Did he leave it there?
Maybe it got lost in the luggage.
perhaps it's in Holland with both of Earnie's feet. What I wouldn't give to be hanging out in a hash bar in a'dam with those three feet right now.

That was too funny.
I picture one of those Red Light District show "windows" with those 3 feet, stoichkov's manners and Albright's heart.

Yeah, Marco's right foot got lost in the luggage. But I'm pretty sure his left will make up for it. And if Hudson ever decides to use Earnie correctly, maybe you'll see him play up to his capabilities.

Duh! The amazing thing is that it should be obvious to everyone that Marco isn't going to touch the ball with his right foot yet he still can beat so many people on the dribble. Kinda like Preki's unstoppable cutbacks.
Marco gets out of plenty of tight situtations by using only his left too. It really is a testament to his stature. People are still afraid of him.

Only at the buffet line.
Marco's left foot is really, really good. Unfortunately it's attached to this Marco and not the Marco from 4 years ago. No doubt Maro WAS the greatest player in DC United history. Discuss...
