Hello, I'm a spanish fan of Tony Meola since Italy's WC'90. I live in Spain and don't have possibilities to get videos, documentaries of Tony. Where can I get any video, documentary of Tony or 90's USMNT? Any Torrents? I have seen the youtube videos but the quality is too poor. Please, Help me. I'm a USMNT supporter, too and my girlfriend has bought me the new third offical jersey of USMNT :D. Go US!

Hey now, dude was an awesome GK back in the day! I saw him play in 1997, when DC United put a then-league-record 20 shots on goal vs his Metros and he did very well to limit the damage to just 2-0. He was as good a shot-stopper as I have ever seen, with the possible exception of Kasey Keller. It's too bad about the weight, he couldn't move as well in his last few years in the league, but his pro career was trailblazing for an American and his college GA record still stands at UVa (0.32).

chessplayer is right. make fun of him for his weight if you want, but Tony put in a lot of good years for us. the team's not what it is right now if not for players like Tony.

One thing I like about Tony was his distribution of the rock. The guy had a tremendous boot. I remember one time in Spartan Stadium a demonstration he did before a match. I think it was his warm up, but he was booting the ball like 80 or 90 yards each kick with both feet. These were his drop kicks. They were like bombs against opposing defenses.

He's still playing professionally, by the way. I saw him playing for New Jersey's MISL side on FSC last week. Got beat at the near post, though. ;)

Yeah, I saw some of that, too. I was probably completely out of the loop, but I had NO IDEA he was playing in the MISL this year.

I wonder if it is just his love for the game (or game resembling the game, anyway) or if he needs the money.

If he's playing in MISL he probably just needs the money, although he should be eligible to collect Social Security soon.

Real classy guy. I'm an just intern with the Wave and he had no problem taking time to talk to me after a tough overtime loss.

Here's a cool story about Tony.

I grew up in Charlottesville, VA where the University of Virginia is located. My family went to all the UVA games (partly because my brother used to play for them, just before the Meola era) and Tony was by far my favorite player. I just remember his incredible shot stopping, and it was rare to see him give up a goal (something like a 0.3 GAA for his career).

Well, when I was in the first grade (so that would be back in fall of 1989 when I was 5 or 6...and the USMNT was trying to qualify for Italia '90), I would always talk about the UVA games at school to whoever would listen. Well it just so happened, I had a student teacher at the time who was a student at UVA, and knew Tony quite well. She always hear me talk about him, and finally one day brought me this big manilla envelope.

I opened it up and inside was a letter from Tony, a signed Soccer Digest magazine, which he was on the cover of, and a couple other Tony related things.

The student teacher could tell how much I liked Tony, and must have told him somehow that he has this big 6 year old fan that she teaches. Tony was kind enough to send all that to me.

Of course being 6, this totally made my year. I still have the autographed Soccer Digest tucked away somewhere, but have no idea where any of the other stuff is (including the letter).

On to 2006, it was nice that I live 5 miles from Cary, NC to see Tony get is 100th and final cap for the USA against Jamaica some 17 years later.

I've heard that Tony works in the Ironmen's front office as well as playing for them. He was doing something with mortgages when he was in Kansas City, Diego Gutierrez was involved too, but I don't know if he still does that.

You know his Wiki page is really interesting.

I never knew he tried out with NY Jets or that he was in a play or that he went to 2002 WC.

He should try out for the Jets again. He's had a lot more practice with that kick since 1994.

I remember his game in the 2-0 win over England back in '93 at Foxboro. He was absolutely incredible that evening.
