Is arguing over whether or not Ronaldo fully stopped before taking the PK really that big of a deal?

Yes, because everything Ronaldo does is Polemic.

Not really, I deal with cancer everyday and have perspective but it really demonstrates the integrity of people. That's all.

Yes, because everything Ronaldo does is Polemic.

It comes with the prestige.

But did he not only feint but completely stop, is there not a rule against a full stop?

No, there is no such rule.

It might be bad sportsmanship for some but there were no rules broken.

I am pretty sure I've heard commentators say that you can't completely stop once you've started your forward movement when taking a PK. And I think I've seen it called back in some instances back in Brazil.

I know definitely there used to be a rule about stopping in the run-up to a PK. Whether that rule is still in effect, I don't know.

I don't know. I have seen Simao do it forever.

"The goalkeeper cannot take actions (such as waving his arms or yelling) to try to intentionally distract the kicker because that would be "unsporting", nor can the kicker start his run & then stop for the purpose of faking the Goalkeeper, for the same reason."

I am pretty sure it was somewhat Ronaldo's intent...

But the rules clearly state:

"Feinting to take a penalty kick to confuse opponents is permitted as part of football."

The real debate here should centre around whether what Ronaldo (and countless other players) do is 'unsporting' or not. I don't think so and since it will be an inherently subjective topic I cannot see any agreement from the BS community on it. If something is that subjective then I also don't see how officials can govern it.

What else do you want to talk about until Euro 2008 starts? I'd happily argue the toss over whether he stopped or not until then... :p

You're correct. I pulled the info from another source but now I see that what you wrote above is all that is written in the FIFA rule. So I guess it is, as you said, up to the referee. FIFA could surely clarify the rule a little bit more to include stopping completely. Ronaldo stopped early enough that Cech didn't bite. I guess if he did bite, the ref should have called it back. But then again, they can't even get the goalie off the line issue correct ...

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/feinting
feint (fnt)
1. A feigned attack designed to draw defensive action away from an intended target.
2. A deceptive action calculated to divert attention from one's real purpose. See Synonyms at wile.
To make a feint.
1. To deceive with a feint.
2. To make a deceptive show of.
[French feinte, from Old French, from past participle of feindre, to feign; see feign.]

Feinting is an action, it is not stopping in the middle of your run-up. On top of that, it's unsporting. It would have been interesting to see if it would have been called back had he not choked.

Ronaldo if not plagued with Injuries would have become one of the best ever. To compare him with C.Ronaldo is an insult to the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo is a better player without a doubt.

This skill with the ball is just remarkable, I've never seen feet that fast or agile

You could easily argue that C. Ronaldo could become one of the best ever. To put things into some perspective you should consider how many goals he scored this season and then compare that to Ronaldo at his peak. C. Ronaldo isn't even a striker...

Cristiano may not be a striker but you cannot deny that Man U plays a system where he is constantly one of the main threats on goal.
However, If he keeps up what he has done this season then he will almost certainly surpass Ronaldo.

Club-wise. Portugal needs to get their shit together.

Obviously. Portugal will not win a World Cup with C. Ronaldo and probably not a Euro, either.

C. Ronaldo will have all the club accolades while Ronaldo has all the country accolades.
