Working an indoor tournament on Saturday. U12B. Not particularly skilled players - D2 at best.Red team is losing 4-1 with three minutes to go and really don't look like scoring. One of their players goes down following a fairly soft challenge. Suspect he was upset and frustrated at the score, etc., and the poor lad was crying. His team clears their lines and as the opposition keeper picks ball up, I blow to take care of the poor wee fella. We get him sorted and I go to restart with a drop-ball to the blue keeper. Then a red player comes sprinting in to contest.I asked him if he was going to let the keeper collect. He asked if he had to.I replied that he did not, but it'd be nice if he did as I'd stopped play so his player could receive treatment and the keeper had the ball in his hands at that point. He carried on, so as I was talking to him, I dropped the ball to the keeper.Only a minute or so left and nothing else happened.Until the players were haking hands and I was leaving the floor. Red drop ball player came over to me. Now remember, he is 11. And looked me in the eye and said" You're a butthead! I could've scored on that drop-ball."I was stunned for a second, then gathered my wits and advised him in no uncertain terms that he better shut up or else his day would be done. His father, who is that team's coach, was standing right there. He ripped into him something terrible! Made him come back and apologize. They had an extensive come to Jesus meeting between games apparently!I'm still chuckling about that!

Sounds like the game was served by the father's interaction, though I admit I would have had a very hard time not going to the back pocket, but probably could have done it.
Pretty funny story, though.

been called lots of things though I have never been called a butthead.
Just wonder if good ole dad didn't mutter those words about an official before.

At least the father DID step in. Too many would probably blame you and assume you did something to set off their angel of a child.

Father/coach was really cool. He understood what went on and told me he'd explain the sporting part of an uncontested drop-ball.
Kid has a known (to the dad, I've never seen him before)frustration/temper/attitude problem - he is by far the best kid on the team, but still not acceptable.
Coach pulled him from the second game. Twice. Told him his attitude was terrible and he needed to get it together.
Caution? Pointless. Wouldn't carry over to next game. Send off? Again, I think the wrath of the father was enough in this situation. Had the dad/coach been of the attitude that I was wrong and that little Johnny was justified in his actions, then I'd've had no compunction in going for the back pocket.

One thing to mention, a caution usually DOES carry to the next game, many leagues and tournaments have yellow card accumulation penalties. You caution him today, I get him tomorrow and someone else next week, he may have to sit out a game.
i agree, wrath of Dad is much worse!

Not in this tournament. Were they to do so, I might've considered it.

Not in this tournament. Were they to do so, I might've considered it.
Further to this, a mate who posts on here called me to advise of the state position on cards and accumulation of the same, so I did some digging.
Our state (TN) requires that ALL cautions and sendings-off must result in a referee report for all sanctioned tournaments, indoors and out. And none of us are working unsanctioned tournaments, so that means all cards.
What happens to the report is different depending on the tournament, in this case, had I carded the little urchin, the tournament director would've got it and sent to TN Soccer, although as the team was from out of state, it gets a little blurry. I imagine TS would forward to teams home state.
State tracks this stuff via points and when a threshold is reached, player is suspended.
Not sure how a tournament would know that a player had accumulated enough points as a result of a caution to sit out the next game, but that's not for me to worry about.
So now you know. Thanks TS.

I remember once (before I began reffing) when sitting on the sidelines watching my (now a 28 year old father, then a 13 year old hot shot) playing out of position and getting frustrated. Ref blow a whistle on him and he spouts off a clear dissenting opinion.
This was about 15 feet from me and I lit into the boy pretty tight and quick to the order of play the game and respect the ref or I will pull him from the field. I recieved a quick "yes sir."
Turned sheepishly to the ref who was putting his yellow card back in his pocket and jogged by saying that "things seemed well sorted out...."
