Iran develops electro-optical/radar system

The electro-optical equipment could act as a viable alternative where radar fails to cover a particular range.

Massoud Tabibian, head of the project, added that the system is comprised of night-vision sensors and laser range finders capable of effective operation under extreme weather conditions.

This kind of thing is pretty common in Russian systems. The SA-6 used by the Vietnamese against the US had similar optical backups to the radar.

RADAR is also vulnerable, so many systems use an optical backup as a countermeasure to antiradiation missiles. It really limits your range though.
