The fabulous sequel to my "Evil Music" thread.
Ahh, Valentine's Day. A day for love. Not that I know anything about that. So I want to know what love is and I want you to show me. Give me examples of great love songs. Now, I am going to put in an important restriction - the songs can only be about an existing romantic love between people in a relationship, not "I love you please love me" or "hey stranger please have sex with me" or "we broke up and I really miss her/him/it" or anything else before or after the relationship.
I went over my collection of 2-3000 musical pieces, and I have less than 10 that actually fit this restriction. Strangely enough, love is not a frequent topic in Scandinavian funeral dirges or proto-fascist marches. Most are fairly unnoteworthy:
John Denver - Annie's Song
Johnathan Richman - Reno
Johnathan Richman - I Must Be King
The Turtles - Happy Together
Cyndi Lauper - All Through The Night
Sting - Fields of Gold
Thompson Twins - Hold Me Now
But my favorite love song has to be from the corporate boy-band parody group "Meaty Cheesy Boys" that seems as sincere and emotional and stupid as I have read young love often is.
Let's Go Get Some Fries
Well I know that it's been hard girl,
all the things that we went through.
I'm sorry that I hurt you
When I did that thing I said I wouldn't do...
Baby come on, give me a break
I feel so bad
Like I've been hit with a rake...
I understand if you want to cry
I'm so hungry for your love, baby
So let's go get some fries
And I will wipe the tears from your eyes.
Oh, I know deep inside girl
we can work things out.
You belong to me girl.
You're the only one that I dream about.
I offer my heart
and this fluffy facial tissue
I swear to buy you lunch
can we please get past your issue?
We've been together for a month and that's a long long time
We've got to stay together, baby
So let's go get some fries
And I will wipe the tears from your eyes.
I'm only fifteen
but my parents can drive
Girl I make this pledge to you
to keep our love alive.
If I ever break your heart, or make you cry
We'll always have our place, baby
where we can share some fries
And I will wipe the tears from your eyes.
So let's go get some fries
And I will wipe the tears from your eyes.
