I thought we should have a thread for keeping out for the youth players in the MLS. Personally, I would think U-20's would qualify. Some names that come off the top of my head:

Chivas USA:
Jorge Flores

Colorado Rapids:
Tony Beltran

FC Dallas:
Brek Shea
Josh Lambo
Eric Avila
Abdus Ibrahim
Anthony Wallace
Blake Wagner
Dax McCarty
Doudou Toure (Discovery Player application processing)

Houston Dynamo:
N/A

LA Galaxy:
Israel Sesay

Real Salt Lake:
Alex Nimo
Nik Besagno

San Jose Earthquakes:
N/A

Chicago Fire:
N/A

Colombus Crew:
Robbie Rogers

DC United:
N/A

KC Wizards:
Chance Myers

New England Revolution:
Jose Angulo

Red Bull New York:
Jozy Altidore

Toronto FC:
N/A

Of course I am missing some, and there are a bunch of players on waivers. There are also some players who might be called up by their teams. Hopefully people can help add to this list, and help track progress through the preseason.

Cheers.

Add Ward with the Crew

I didn't add him because he turns 21 on Feb 28th before the season starts, Rogers is 20 for most of the season.

I was hoping this thread would be about MLS youth teams and news on their players. On that note, MLSnet.com-Houston seems to be doing a good job of keeping their fans up-to-date on their youth players and teams.

That could be included as well...once someone gets called up.

Gerson Mayen, a member of Chivas-USA's U17/18 Acadamy Team, saw some action in Chivas's preseason scrimmage against the Japanese u-23 team.

Chivas USA 0, Japan U-23 4

An injury-depleted Chivas USA fell to the Beijing-bound Japanese under-23 team at The Home Depot Center.

Two early goals by Hirayama Sota (7th minute) and Yamasaki Ryohei (18th) paved the way for the Japanese Olympic team's victory and the first preseason loss in three games for Chivas USA, who were missing 13 players due to injury.

Just before the end of the first half, Ryohei scored his second goal of the day at the 40th minute, and the visitors closed out the scoring five minutes into the second half when Morishige Masato, one of the 11 subs Japan had in the second half, headed home a corner kick.

Both teams made near-wholesale changes for the second half. Brad Guzan, Sasha Kljestan, Jesse Marsch and Alex Zotinca were the only Chivas USA first-team regulars from 2007 on the field at the start of the match.

Chivas USA (first half; 4-4-2): Brad Guzan, Omar Becerra, Alex Zotinca, Jorge Flores, Jim Curtin, Keith Savage, John Cunliffe, Jesse Marsch, Sasha Kljestan, Arnolfo Salazar, Atiba Harris.

(second half; 4-4-2): Brad Guzan, Omar Becerra, Gerson Mayen, Trey Lee, Darren Spicer, Chukwudi Chinjiju, Kraig Chiles, Dan Paladini, Steven Kaufman, Eric Ebert, Justin Braun

Looks like the Academy teams went 6-2-2 yesterday against some good club teams. Not a bad start.

Not bad at all.

Roughly speaking, the Academy teams look to be of the quality of the top 1/2 of the club teams. Thus, the Crew rolled over hapless Ohio Elite, while Rapids split with more-respected Carmel, and DCU had all it could handle with a loss and a draw against traditional powerhouse Chicago Magic.

A good age cut off to use would be the boys that played at the U-20 World Cup this summer.

Looks like the younger Crew team just took down FC Delco 3-1. That squad looks pretty legit.

Crew U14s are tough, too, smoked the Regional finalists this autumn. Looks like Crew rather quickly stole the top area talent. :)

Their U16 has a bunch of guys that are also listed on the roster for Friedel's academy, including a number of foreign players. Is there a relationship, or did the Crew just recruit their players?

Also, since when has Ben Speas been a Crew youth player? Good snag.

Maybe Friedel has some kind of arrangement whereby Crew Academy can tap into his players for Academy play, since his club is not Academy??

I would add Omar Becerra to Chivas USA. He was another kid who got picked up from the Sueño contest and has done pretty well with the U-18's and has got moved up to the first team.
