amp sink Cuper in shoot-out
Friday 8 August, 2003
Inter’s Trofeo Moretti campaign went from bad to worse as they lost to Sampdoria in a shoot-out.
Hector Cuper made sweeping changes for the second encounter, having just lost 2-1 to Juventus, but retained Christian Vieri to partner Obafemi Martins.
Samp fielded a mainly full-strength squad with new signings Cristiano Doni, Sergio Volpi and Massimo Donati.
Martins has been the undoubted star of Inter’s summer and broke the deadlock with a spectacular strike.
The Nigerian teenager charged on to a Vieri through ball and rifled an unstoppable left-foot drive in by the near post.
Sampdoria fought back with Cristian Zenoni’s long-range effort, but Alberto Fontana was equal to it.
Mohamed Kallon replaced a tired looking Vieri a quarter of an hour into the 45-minute match.
Mere seconds later the Blucerchiati equalised thanks to another defensive error. Aimo Diana’s mis-kicked shot was swept home by the relatively unmarked Fabio Bazzani.
Samp almost took control soon after, as Fontana fingertipped a wonderful Volpi free kick on to the upright.
At half-time Luciano was moved to the right, while Sampdoria introduced Japanese international Atsushi Yanagisawa.
Ex-Atalanta midfielder Doni and Kallon wasted good opportunities to break the deadlock as the fans began to voice their disapproval.
In the final seconds Daniele Adani almost scored an own goal, but the game went to an American-style shoot-out.
A player starts his run from 30 metres up the field and has six seconds in which to score against the goalkeeper.
Martins, Kallon and Luciano had their efforts saved, Yanagisawa missed, while only Samp’s Cameroon player Job scored successfully.
Inter end the tournament with just one point out of a possible six, while Sampdoria go on to contend the Birra Moretti trophy with Juventus in the final game.
You can see all the coverage from this tournament on British Eurosport from 16.45 on Saturday.
