I don't think they put the armband into promo pics. I'm pretty sure Terry's still the skipper

looks like Rio or Gerrard might wear it vs. Switzerland as Terry isn't in the squad,

oh true, i forgot Terry was out injured. Judging by the people there, I'd predict Rio will have it.
I hope David James gets the call for keeper, he's the most competent there, IMO.

According to reports in the papers. Gerrard is meant to be captain for the game. And just because JT was Mcsvens captain doesn't mean Capello will pick him to be his captain.

Well if being the best available player in your position at a club doesn't get u picked by Cappy....

I think, or so I've heard, Capello will rotate the captaincy between Rio, Gerrard, Lampard, Terry, etc. To see who the best leader is, and then he'll make his decision for the World Cup qualifiers in September.

*sigh*, whilst I can't be bothered to get too involved in the debate AGAIN, the one thing that strikes me most about posh rugby (gayboy union, not man's tut'league) is that u should score on every posession, there's no reason not to ruck and maul all the way down the field an inch at the time except those chumps don't have the ball skills not to spill it, and despite this people randomly kick downfield for no apparent reason, THEN to accomodate this they frikkin REWARD YOU for kicking the ball out of play! What sport does that!
I've most sports and most codes and I can't say I miss the "thumbs in eye stamp on hands" cheapshot mentality associated with bourgeoise egg-chasing...
Just because you don't understand a sport doesn't mean you should start insulting it, especially when it just shows that you don't understand it. Why is it that ignorance always seems to breed fear?

I could really start on American Football but I don't mind it, I just think rugby is a more tactically complicated game, in all honesty the most complicated thing about "Gridiron" is the plays, but apart from that you either kick it between the posts or run/throw it after hiking the ball.
While the basic point of rugby is the same, the way you arrive at scoring is a lot more complicated, and that's why I find it a more interesting sport to watch. And yes, Case would probably get snapped in two playing rugby :p
PS: You only get rewarded for kicking the ball out of play when you have a penalty and choose to kick the ball, therefore moving the penalty upfield and getting a lineout. Much the same way that if a penalty is called in NFL the ball is moved 5/10 yards up the pitch. So it's not exactly getting "rewarded" for kicking the ball out of play.

I just can't watch any American football, baseball or MLS without laughing at how commercialised things are. That's all I have to say about it...
How's everybody enjoying the African Cup of Nations?

I don't get the tactics at all in Rugby, surely it's just about moving the ball from side to side, interjecting some penetrative runs and hope to spring gaps? As for the kicking for territory well thats obv but is sooo often poorly executed or done at naive times. Football, BECAUSE u stop after EVERY play, decide what ur gonna do with the ball whilst the defence then has to guess what it think's ur gonna do, how to react to that and what to do if they're wrong, it's by far the most tactical game outside of a chess board. Even down to the individual, like u get guys deliberately show their routes only to bluff the defender so that u give them the same tell then do something else later in the game.
PS: You only get rewarded for kicking the ball out of play when you have a penalty and choose to kick the ball...
Also 40-20s in league, which sure I like the skill involved drawing defenders away from the line to let u kick a bouncer inbounds, but still, I grew up in a soccer mindset whereby kicking the ball out of play was the worst thing u could ever do! + it makes no sense that the penalty for a foul is assessed subjectively twice, I mean if u have an awesome kicker u can get a foul inside ur own 22, hoof it a mile and be in drop-goal range from the lineout, whereas the same foul against a team without such a kicker isn't punished equitably... Sure it's always subjective as Juninho P can hit a freekick on target from 40 whereas Becks can only manage 30, but the whole "that guy fouled u, u can have the ball wherever u can kick it too" logic seems flawed...kinda like punishments for crimes being less severe if you're rich enough to afford an expensive lawyer...oh look Rugby Union managed to get me back to institutionalised hegemony again, funny that
And yes, Case would probably get snapped in two playing rugby :p .
Well possibly now im old and fragile, but in my 3 years playing county union I never got injured once....
And Corona, I couldn't agree with you more, only I am neither ignorant nor fearful (apart from a toff trying to bum me in a Union shower!), but it's AMAZING how many rugby meatheads I have to listen to the same ignorant BS from....
Sanchy, to change topic I hate the african cup of nations becoz I haven't been able to watch much of it at all-can't even tel u who still in it!!! Always feel almost racist tho as I do genuinely see a very african style played by players, noticable when those employed over here adapt their style so notably! U do gotta love the passion they play with tho, Drogs is like a stand-up leader of Men for the Coast and not the whiny prick he is at Cheatski

Full disclosure: I grew in the United States and did not start watching Rugby until I was 18. I still only watch internationals, and it does not rank as a favorite sport of mine, but neither does American football. Therefore my understanding of Rugby's tactics is almost nothing. But I will say that of all the sports I fully understand, i.e. not Rugby, football is the one the depends the most on the strategy and construction of play by the coach. As far as everyone bashing American football, this is exactly the same kind of thing that happens in the US with regards to Association Football or soccer. It's a sad thing for me when people refuse to attempt to understand a new sport. I could have simply stated that rugby was boring the first time I saw because I did not get it, but I kept watching and respect it as a good sport.
With regards to commercialization: I would say that football/soccer is not much better with regards to advertisements and promos. Sure they don't have ads during the game, but I mean the biggest thing on the jersey is the teams sponsor! We should all agree that sports in general have become so important to our culture, that advertisers easily recognize its importance and want in on the action. I do fully contend that it is impossible to watch an NFL game anymore for myself, simply because there are too many commercials during the game.

My bad, I thought u were taking a cheap pop at me!
I've played a decent amount of rugby over the years and whilst it is a laugh to play it really does frustrate me to watch. Mebe not so bad now but when Union first became professionalised it really grated me that the players still had amateur skill levels. I look at tut'league, aussie rules, gaelic football and american football and they all just seem to make alot more sense than union.
I guess my viewing of the NFL is scewed as im priviledged to be in the UK, here channels goto studio pundits instead of commercial alot of the time, and I really find that informative and rewarding to watch. I have got NASN this past year and it is ALOT harder to watch without pundits- it doesn't even goto commercial it just spins the logo with that rubbish theme-jingle...
As highly commercialised as it is, in many ways the OTT nature makes Football seem less so than soccer- marketing etc is sooo stringent, logo-creep is highly policed and sanctioned, u'll only see a certain few brands and they pay top dollar for the exclusivity. I admittedly dislike the uniformity of one kit manufacturer for the entire league, and only a handful of allowed footwear manufacturers, but the "No Fun League" stance to homogeny means that for all the lost individuality, players are hardly walking billboards in the way that adidas had a say in Becks's last 2 transfers and the such....

After re reading your original post I have realized that were not ripping the NFL. I just get tired of ANYONE bringing down sports they don't understand. Whether it's Americans with hockey and soccer, or Brits with the NFL and Baseball. I never understand why people feel the need to rip on other sports. If you don't like it, don't watch it!
Another huge disadvantage of the NFL for me personally is that there are NO international players. I really like the convergence of styles that international players bring to games such as football, baseball, basketball and hockey. I will still watch the 49ers when they are on Tv, but my passion for the NFL left some years ago.

compared to everything, baseball's not that bad. but every sport's commercialized, and it's just how things go I guess. professional sports are a business now. nothing is as bad as basketball, every few minutes or so a media time out gets called for some commercials, if one of the teams doesn't call a TO.
