View Full Version : Sportsman's Park Stadium Possibilities

O.K., I don't necessarily want to start up the whole stadium contraversy again, BUT I can't be the only one who thought what a perfect place this would be for a new Fire stadium. With the auto track history and the horse tracks merging into one facility, that leaves a large space empty which already has a lot of the infrastructure in place to support a stadium. It's in the middle of a primarily Hispanic area, accessible via the Eisenhower or Stevenson, central enough for all, has public transportation ---- what more could we want? Moreover, it's closer to a lot of suburb than Soldier Field.

I wondered how long it would take before someone brought this up. :)

sure sportsmen's would be nice if Anschutz was willing to buy the land and renovate the seating to make it soccer specific, but I'm not sure he is willing to do so. Also I read that Hawthorne which is next door practically will pick up race dates and would be running the same time as soccer season. I don't know if there would be enough parking for both events at the same time.

They handled parking for 65k people for the first two CART races there. If you add in the extra space gained with the race track's demise they can easily handle parking for 6-8k horse racing fans (in Hawthorne's lot alone) and 20-30k footy fans. Does Phil want to pay $40+ million for the facility and maybe another $10-15 million to fix it up for footy & Brittney shows? With the politics of Cicero & Chicago, not to mention SFX (Tweeter Ctr. & Alpine Valley) getting their panties in a wad, what should be an ideal venue becomes at best problematic.

Has the Illinois Racing Board set the racing dates for next year? Thoroughbred would only be a problem for afternoon games early in the season; I can't believe Arlinton won't get Mother's Day through September or October. That leaves the buggies....I guess it does make sense that the summer meet would transfer from Sportsman's to Hawthorne. There is always the chance that Maywood might bid for a meet between April and October.

Except that the auto racing history isn't done. CART is planning on running there again the week before Memorial Day next year.
Good thought, but...

Here's my question, why would I want to go to Cicero to watch the Fire, let alone, go there for anything?

CART wants to run in Chicago, not necessarily at the CMS. They really want to have a road race, but LSD is out. If they run less than three weeks b4 the Indy 500 they are fools and we know how dodgy the weather can be in early May. The Chicago Motor Speedway is done, stick a fork in it.
As for the fella from Hillside, you need to get out a little more. If the FIRE play in Cicero, you will come. If you don't, someone else will be there with your ticket.

Fixed your post. . . (Just Kidding).
"Good evening and welcome to soccer Saturday. I'm Jack Edwards alongside Ty Keough coming to you live from Betty Loren-Maltese Stadium."

LOL!
I think we can say we'll not be hearing that in the future. I think the Fire want a public-private partnership on their future stadium.

I think Jack Edwards is Betty's illegitimate love child.
