based on this list...underrated= Mascherano, Joe Cole, Iniesta, Ferdinand
In the following order: Ferdinand > Iniesta > Mascherano >>> J. Cole
These lists are a joke.

Essien is rated IMO.
true he is rated generally, but i'm surprised he is not on the shortlist considering he's probably the most well rounded, and most influencial CM in the world.

name a CM who is as good when you combine aspects of defending and attacking together, and who can run all over the pitch without tiring. The guy is simply a beast. I cannot think of anybody who brings what Essien brings to a team.

De Rossi and possibly Cambiasso as well.
As far as influence there are numerous CM's who are just as influential for their club teams as Essien is.

Lampard, Gerrard and Fabregas all had better seasons than Essien last season. That's just in England. There is no way that any of these 4 players are underrated - everyone acknowledges how good they are.

Another post from vancity eagle that reeks of African bias. Essien is a very good player but he is not well rounded (his defense is superb but his attack is lacking) and is not the most influential central midfielder in the world.

tbh, he has probably been the most difficult midfielder for Utd to handle in recent times.

An underrated player has obviously been Zaki. He has certainly been making people sit up and take notice over the last 6 weeks.

All four should have been included, but Mascherano and Cole are actually underrated whereas Iniesta and Ferdinand are pretty fairly rated as far as how their influence on their side is acknowledged.

Apparently not fairly-rated enough by some posters (*cough* Teso *cough*).

Teso doesn't count, seeing as he's the one poster on this board who actually manages to overrate the best player in the world.

As i underrated per ability, sure he is. How often do you hear people talking about him? People think that Terry, Lampard or someone else is the back bone of our team when it is really Essien who is the engine and keeps us running. When Essien is playing good, Chelsea is playing good.

I thought that as well, but Chelsea have has no problems since he has been out, which leads me to think it was Lampard after all who was the engine of that team.
