John Terry has made a statement sure to surprise football fans all over.

The England skipper has publicly expressed his admiration for Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, calling him 'the best in the world'

Despite Carragher being overlooked by England for most of his career, Terry believes he is easily good enough.

Speaking to LFC TV, Terry said: "I personally think that over the last four or five years he has been the best defender in the world.

"He has everything you need to be a world class defender and you also have to look at what he's achieved in The Champions League with Liverpool."

The interview with John Terry was for a special documentary about Jamie Carragher making 500 appearances for the club.

Hmmmmm...what about Terry himself?
Over the past 4-5 years...what about Puyol, Nesta, etc?

I think Carragher is very good, but the best...just don't
know.

Ugh the operative word is "personally". How can you state what Terry's personal opinion should be?

Because he's an Arsenal/Milan supporter that's how.:D

If that's the _exact_ quote, then my respect for John Terry just went up ten-fold. Classy thing to say.

Terry is right. Carragher has been amazing and he makes it look so easy it seems that he doesn't do anything. He just seems to be at the right place at the right time all of the time.

I didn't say he was CRAP. Go easy.
I think that what Terry did was boost up a down and out
teammate and fellow defender.

I'm not usually one to put any stock into who or what players consider the best in football but I'm glad Carra is getting some recognition.

While I don't think there has been one clear "best" defender in Europe in the last couple of seasons, I do believe Carragher is amongst the 4-5 best.

I'm really glad about this comment. Carragher HAS been the best defender in the world and he has gotten so very little recognition. Respect, Johnny boy.

He certainly hasnt been the best attacking defender (eg bringing the ball out of defence or dangerous at set-pieces) but he has been the best 'defender' since Rafa moved him to CB

I dont think he wanted to look like a tool and say that Carra is the best....after myself ;)

He is one of the best defenders in Europe at the moment, I wouldn't say he was THE best, even as a 'Pool supporter.

I didn't think Terry had that much class, there you go- get surprised every day!

It's a MISQUOTE as usual. I Just watched the video.

Terry says:
"He is ONE OF the best, if not the best"

and then later says...

"PROBABLY the best"

Sneaky media... they parsed the quotes and edited out the extras.

Preaching to the bloody choir here aren't we?

Piss off you bottom feeding fish breathed fool. Does 5-1 mean anything to you?

He probably meant in terms of international football.

Ugh the operative word is "personally". How can you state what Terry's personal opinion should be?

I see you were quick to rush for the old 'opinion' cop out. Carragher is not the best defender in Europe, far from it. Therefore Terry's 'opinion' is not based in reality and can therefore be disregarded completely. Plus it's a misquote regardless.

While I don't think there has been one clear "best" defender in Europe in the last couple of seasons, I do believe Carragher is amongst the 4-5 best.

Care to name them? I don't see Carragher being in the top 5 and that is only when considering stoppers.

I watched the video. Terry SPECIFICALLY mentioned Carragher's underrated achievements in Europe over the last 5 years. S-P-E-C-I-F-I-C-A-L-L-Y. :)
