I thought we were "dominant" in the concacaf region. That's what the MLS chief said the other day. kansas City, one of our power houses, just got thumped 6-1 by some Mexican club for the region champions cup. Doesn't sound like "dominant" to me....

1) old news

2) calling KC a league "powerhouse" is a bit of a stretch - they currently linger in the basement of their conference

3) I suspect he was more referring to the National team

What i don't understand is this...

KC won in 2000, so shouldn't they have been in the Champions cup in 2001? Putting them as represenatives of MLS is old news. It isn't the same KC that had the Championship season 2 years back. They are making us look like fools.

They were, but the 2001 tournament was cancelled and all qualified teams were moved to the 2002 tournament. KC was tied for second in the league when they played Morelia last week, so its not like they are the dregs of MLS.

KC won in 2000, so shouldn't they have been in the Champions cup in 2001? You have to understand that the operation of CONCACAF is one of the unsolved mysteries of the world. They seem to have an extreme aversion to doing anything the same way twice in a row. (I think it's called the "Let's Re-Invent the Wheel" syndrome.)

The '99 CC was an 8 team tourney and was held in Sep/Oct of '99 (surprise). The reps from the US were Chicago ('98 MLS Cup Champ) and DC (reigning CC champ).

The '00 CC was also an 8 team tourney (surprise) and was held in Jan '01 (calendars also aren't very important in CONCACAF land). The 2 reps from the US were DC & LA (the 1st & 2nd place MLS teams in '99).

The '01 CC evaporated or was sent to Bora-Bora or God knows what happened to it, but no one here in the western hemisphere has ever found it. (Some claim that the tourney in Jan was really the '01 tourney, but that then begs the question of what hapened to the '00 tourney.)

The '02 CC was changed to a 16 team tourney (maybe to make up for the missing '01 tourney? but more likely because an 8 team tourney was getting stale) and was/is being held (it started in Mar and might yet be over this year if they don't keep delaying matches) and the US gets/got 3 reps, the '00 MLS Cup winner (KC), the '01 MLS Cup winner (SJ), and the US "2nd place" team (Chi as 2nd place in the '00 & '01 supporter's shield races and 2nd place in the '00 MLS Cup finals)(Miami having already gone down the tubes). DC also got in by being runner-up in the '01 CONCACAF "Make the Rich Richer" Cup (aka The Giant's Cup).

or,

to answer your question more directly - yes.
