First I think that we need to establish who we are going to target. One group, couple of groups etc etc. Then from there develop the fliers accordingly. Also there is a law which disallows the distribution of flyers. I know that you cant place flyers on cars but I don't know how it plays out when you hand them out to people. This is something to look at.

I was thinking a bi-lingual one in english and spanish -

I dont want to write to much on it. not like a whole statment - just like bring Football to New York City. We are the group voicing our desire for a New York team - blah blah blah - lets see the art and go from there.

This flyer will no doubt be useful. But I think it's time to develop a comprehensive plan to accomplish our goal. PErhaps before the meeting on the 26th (which I might not be able to make after all), a few ideas should be kicked around, talking points for the meeting. I have couple, which can be used at everyone's choice.

A. What is our goal?
If it's a team in Queens, how do we get there?

B. What do we know?
Garber wants a team in Queens.
JAck Bell wrote an article saying Wilpon may be interested.
Not much else.

1. Let's gather more information
--- ask jack bell if he knows anything more
--- any other NY based soccer writers (vescey?, longman?)

C. Once we have all the information we can get, we tailor an action plan to the known facts and the goal.

D. My guess is that we are in fact not very close to achieving our goal of having a team in queens, so we have to do more than show support for it. We have to aggressively put it on the agenda. How do we do that?

1. Get media attention. How do we do that?
--- one idea I've thought about is a twist on the petition. LEt's sign "pledges" up for season tickets. Maybe even ask for a symbolic one dollar from each pledger. Of course, I think we need I'd say at least a thousand to demonstrate some real interest, and some real organizational skill on our part. If we got our act together sufficiently, and put people on the street on Roosevelt avenue (esp spanish speakers) to perform this stunt, I bet we would get some spanish language paper coverage ... Hoy and El Diario. I could assist with that.

2. Get attention of local pols. Media attention will help with it. Also, the local councilman, Hiram Monserrate, is running for state senate this year against the incumbent senator, John Sabini. Shea is within that contested senate district. It is likely to be hotly contested (monserrate lost last time by about 200 votes), so if you make this a "Community issue" ie the community wants it, one or both may pick up the cause. This is where I think the "pledge drive" would also be helpful.

Of course, this is all premised on the notion that to get what we want, we have to push for it... that it might not happen without our work. Therefore, we've got to be very proactive and aggressive with it.

Anyway, these are just some ideas. I think we need to brainstorm, then implement. It would be good if the first meeting could kick off the first steps to implementation.

Damn Metro go - awesome post!!

Ok - we know the league wants it and we know there in talks - sadly that just leaves us in a spot where all we can do is support.

Im down for reaching out to the councilmen - if you have contacts - let me know and ill work on reaching out to them.

Right now at the meeting i was going to talk about reaching out to the public - right now we dont have a large enough group to catch the publics eye. We need to get more people - thats why i think the first steps will be getting flyers together - getting to the youth matches to make our presense known by the fans. Maybe even some charity work as a group to get some exposure - might even get is in the papers. Right now the first step is growing our numbers.

I think our situation is a little different from the Sons of Ben because they are vying for a stadium on public lands - right now from what we have heard they are talking about shea and its parking lot. Its private land - im sure if Wilpon wante to do something, he would not have as many blocks as in Philly because he owns the land - please - let me know if im off base here.

Metrogo - great job though man - you are 100% right - we need to be aggressive and we will. I think our focus right now should be increasing the BB number and getting our name out there. Thoughts!

absolutely, we have to have a big enough core group before taking on something as ambitious as my suggestion. So you are right, the first job is to expand our own group.

And yes, it is definitely relevant that our goal is to get a private person do something with his own money and own private land, and that is a very different matter than trying to get a stadium on public land. Ultimately Wilpon's goal is to make money. But I think he would be more responsive (though of course not beholden) to public and political pressure because he's a very public businessman in a very public business that is dependent on his good relationships with the community and its leaders. So he is not wholly inured to public pressure.

Plus, at any rate, a little media buzz would help show him that he can make money on this. MAybe we takethe petition, or pledge list, to his office to make the point.

I like the idea of a bi-lingual flyer. But if they are handed out in other neighboorhoods that are not prodominetly spanish speaking, then they should have the language specific to that community. For example if they are being handed out in an Italian neighborhood then instaed of an english/spanish flyer, it would be english/italian.

That's not what I meant smartass. I meant if the flyers are being handed out in another area that has a majority of people from one country, then the flyers should be in that language. I never said that the flyer should have every language know to man on it. Yes I agree that when handed out in Flushing the flyers should be in Spanish, but that isn't the case for all areas. If flyers are being handed out in Maspeth as weel, why should those be in Spanish?

Oh yeah, what a good idea you gave me. All I said was that there is no reason to be handing out flyers in Spanish in a non-spanish neighborhood. There is no need to call me names just because I said you were making a smartass comment about my post ya ********ing asshole.

Painkillerz take it easy. No need for cursing. You can say whatever you want but always with respect to all those on the board. Nymetrobulls is a fellow poster and I dont like to see any poster from the NYC boards disrespect. I feel and I'm sure that all the regular posters to this board will agree, that disrespect, name calling and general malaise towards others is UNNECCESSARY and UNCALLED FOR. You can have a difference of opinion but we will NOT TOLERANT name calling or anything of the sort. Next time you feel that name calling is neccessary please see your way out of these boards.

Thanks

i I know Queens,

You do? Where are all the japanese speakers in Queens?

AT any rate, what is this flyer supposed to accomplish? If someone happens to read it, what do you want them to do?

why are we arguing

Here is a thought i have on a flyer - its a good question - what do we want it to go - thanks Metrogo!

My thoughts on Flyer which i will share saturday

I dont want to pay money and hand them out for people to throw them on the floor - i want them to be handed out to people who will post them on cars - to people who might post them in a store front - where the public will see it and say - let me check it out!

While handing them out in the subway and at games are great ideas - im sure a lot of our $$ would wind up on the floor!!

Right! Now, if someone reads it, is there something for them to do? Will you ask them to go to the web site and sign the petition? If the y go to the web site, will you ask for their email address so they can receive updates and information?

The flyer should raise awareness, but it should also help get volunteers. IF you're spending money on this, make the money do as much work as possible for you. So, you should have something for volunteers to do.

Aiiight! Lets get rollin guys!

The Flyer should...

Inform about Garber's desire for a team in NYC
Inform about Wilpon as a potential owner
Inform about the Borough Boys
Ask to sign the Petition
Forgot anything?!

Now - One short, smart and catchy paragraph about each bulletpoint and we got it, no?!
