Do you have attendance for every games? It's kinda hard to find these figures, especially considering I don't read Greek (Greek alphabet neither!).

Thanks!

Hmmm!

Not yet but I hope that in a couple of weeks onwards I may be able to get this sort of data easily.

I know that the average for Day one was in the area of 2800 - 3000 oer game! :(

Dont be surprised.

- AEK, Olympiakos two of the biggest clubs are building new stadiums and have to play in smaller ones
- Bad stadiums and poor measures for safety along with poor services on the ground gradually are sending people away
- Many Greek teams besides some bigger ones (Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, AEK, PAOK, and maybe Iraklis - in that order) dont have big support.
- Finally, dont forget we are a country of 10Million people.

But the numbers are low! Hopefully after the renovations thanks to the Olympics and the building of the new Olympiakos and AEK grounds things will start to move into the new century... ;)

Sorry to say it but even for a country with 10 million peoples you have too small crowds in your domestic leagues.

Compared to countryes smaller than greece Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria have much bigger crowds.

What I don't understand is that how can the clubs in greece afford to buy so many stars when they almost don't have any spectators.

First of all, you are not forgiven, you shall pay dearly for what you've said in here!

Derbys and CL games are sold outs, smaller clubs dont play attractive football, they just try to do whatever they can to destroy the opponents game and hold onto a tie, or maybe win on a counter attack so the games are not so good. At this time a lot of stadiums are being rebuild for the Olympics, so most big teams play in smaller ones. And third when you live in Greece you have a lot of alternatives, to spend your time i mean, people here dont revolve their lives around football, its not like it is inter 10 months a year you know, so they just prefer to go to a big match.

They complaint from the fans around here is that the teams dont buy enough star players, big names etc. to strengthen the squads, and the truth is that big clubs could invest more money on transfers, but they just prefer to sign free players because they dont care enough to scout for foreign players, because they dont need them to get into the CL every year and get the money.

Hey Hey Hey it was not to be mean. I know that most teams are building bigger and newer stadiums at the moment, what I just wanted to point out is that it seems odd for most north european fans that regular CL teams as Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and AEK have such small crowds compared to the size of greece. In denmark we are only 5 million and football are not that popular at all, to say it frankly people that are watching sport here are considered as idiots but still FC Copenhagen have 22k in average. What I just wanted to say that
Panathinaikos have an old stadium it can only hold 16k thats wierd. In Denmark we never get any teams into the CL and I consider our gates in Denmark as extremely low compared to Sweden but we have 7k in average.

Don't misunderstand me I am not trying to wage a war, just wondering why a country with such a success in the international leagues can live by having so low gates.

relax man, i was only joking, i understood that you 've only made an observation, and while i wasnt quite serious i still gave you some answers,
the teams dont have small crowds, each one has a couple of millions, and they can boast large crowds of 80.000+ but only at big games, like derbys and CL games, since the league isnt exactly "sparkling".

The2ndMouse
31 Aug 2003, 04:10 AM
... let me also add that the new stadiums are desperatelly needed if we want attendances to raise again (because they used to be counted in 20.000 or 30.000 people in the 70's ! for example and in >5.000 even for matches between smaller teams! ).

It has now come to the fact that the old stadiums and the loose* security measures are making the sport not safe and not fun to go and watch!

* by loose, I mean compared to the problem. The stadiums sometimes have an incredible amount of police force, but this is not enough as large groups or Team Ultras with a bad attitude (not the good ones) are alowed to enter the stadiums due to lack of the type of control that would refuse them entry after they created trouble.

But we are improving. The new stadiums are investments that will need the relevant safety features discussed to be maintained and profitable. The new problem might be what level of control reaches the borders of need and traspasses to through tthe borders of excessive control and even loss of some basic rights! ;)

We'll see...

how many foreigns (non EU players) allow the Greek Federation per team? and it is true the yugoslavs are the most popular aside the brazilians?

but many foreigners have an EU passport somehow! ;)

Anyway this is a common problem all over Europe.

Yes, players from Yugoslavia find a very convenient career move coming to Greece.

Proximity to home, same religion, etc a big plus for most.

wow! thanks for the quick response! you're talking about catholic ortodox I guess? BTW please read your private messages.

The2ndMouse
22 Sep 2003, 11:05 AM
Not catholic orthodox

We are called christian orthodox.

Yes the majority of Serbs and Montenegrans are Christian orthodox and the two countries have a long history of cooperation and alliance in the area especially in the balcan wars circa 1912-1918.

Anyway, dirty and filthy politics aside and dirty and filthy aspects of church politics aside we seem to be close to one another for ages...

Lets not get into politics though... Politics dont mix well with sports! ;)

I live in Vouliagmeni the Municipality, not Vouliagmenis the avenue. Vouliagmeni is after Glyfada and Voula.

But right now I am writting from the Nort East Aegean Island of Lesvos and the capital city of Mytilini.

Welcome to the forum man... (I mean the Southern Europe forum... as obviously you are "older than me in here" )
