View Full Version : Players are out of control

I'm not a ref, but as much pro soccer as I watch on TV, I'm convinced that the players are completely out of control and that the refs need to take it back.
EVERY time the ref makes a big decision, he is surrounded by at least half a dozen players screaming at him like lunatics. The worst part is that this happens not just on controversial decisions, but even on decisions that anyone with 20/300 eyesight can see without glasses. A guy is rugby tackled in the penalty area but idiots surround and scream at the ref when a blindingly obvious penalty is given. A guy's shirt is torn but "it's not a foul, ref!"
What needs to happen is very simple: the only players who should be allowed to argue a call are the team captain(s) and the player(s) directly involved in the incident in question. There's no need for random idiots to sprint 40 yards to argue a call that they were in no position to see.
The player involved in the incident can speak for himself. The team captain's role is to speak for the team. I'm sorry but anyone else who argues a call should be carded.
I think arguing hysterically about every big decision has become reflexive, a habit, rather than reserved for decisions where players actually believe the ref messed up. Order needs to return to the game.

Obviously, you're correct. But a few points:
The only thing the team captain gets to do is attend the coin toss. There is NOTHING in the laws of the game regarding the captains right to argue with the referee. Sure, if he is respectful it will be better; but it is not a right of the captain.
If ANYONE makes a 40 yard sprint to the referee, he will be cautioned. The team will notify the center of the hostility and it will be immediately dealt with. That has been shown before.
By generalizing, anyone who argues should be carded you will have many, many bookings. That would kill a match and a league.

The arguing of a call seems to part of the game, there is quite a lot of it in the game for every decision made there are two parties, the innocent and the guilty. As referees we have to be judge, jury and excutioneer (not my favorite part of the job). If a player wants to calmly ask what I saw that is one thing (I personally don't have a problem with it), I will give a short explanation "studs up" etc, at that point I'm done. If the player keeps going then I will deal with it stern talking to, cards, etc. No player has the right to demand or question the decisions of the referee team. However in my opion if they would like a quick explanation of a decision, and there is time (offended team has elected to take a cerimonial restart vs. a quick restart, halftime, injury.) I have no problem with it. I will not sit there and argue a call with players, my philosophy is you committed a foul and got caught, heres the punishment, lets play.
According to the LOTG the captain of a team, has no special status or privileges under the LOTG but he has a degree of responsibility for the behavior of his team.
I see no need in my opion to give the captain any authority, right/privlege to speak only to the referee. He is treated the same as any other member of the team. If the referee desires to speak with the captain about the behavior of his team, that is fine, or for any other reason they deem necessary.
However giving the captain the right to argue with the referee is wrong in my opinion.

I agree with the OP because I have SEEN players run 40 yards to argue and not get cautioned. I also do not feel that the referee can adequately deal with this because of your second statement. The leagues MUST be the one to punish the players after the match either financially or with suspensions. The players know the referee will not caution all 7 arguing players, so it basically empowers them to do so.

I have done 5 cautions in one time. Hard foul (caution), kid "give him a fu***** red (caution:)), then arguing teammates from both sides. That was an experience. none of the coaches had a problem though. They thanked me after the game for teaching their kids a lesson.

Just a clarification: when I said that only the players involved in the incident and the team captains should be allowed to argue a call, I'm talking about the way things ought to be. If this requires a change to the LOTG, then so be it. I just get sick of seeing this in every professional game... which obviously filters down to a lesser extent to the amateur game.
And yes, you will see many bookings early on, but eventually players will figure out that they need to STFU and play the game.
