I just moved to a new place and got my internet hookup. I have two computers - a laptop and a desktop. My laptop is Vista and what I am typing with now. My desktop is XP and cannot connect to the internt.

I am using the same cable, switching between machines (unpluging from the laptop and pluging into the desktop). My laptop has no problems...

I've followed the steps of resetting my IP address, with windows promps, checking the LAN connection, and trying the cmd prompt (ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew). The problem I have is when trying to renew. I get an error that says something along the lines of unable to connect (detect?) DHCP. Additionally, when I try to release and then renew my IP address, initially I get 0.0.0.0 but when I recheck, my old IP address returns.

Can anybody please help?

(and yes, I have done some web searching, but have not found anything and I am still unpacking from my move...)

It's possible that your modem is tying itself to the MAC address of of the laptop. I usually recommend getting an inexpensive router - it'll prevent you from having to swap cables, provide additional security, and provide connection stability.

I have a router, and tried to hook up both to it and neither worked. I called my IP tech support and they said something about deleting and reinstalling a few drivers, but I would need to call my tech support for that...I guess that is what I'm going to have to do...Dell, here I come...:(

Okay, it was a duh! I just needed to reset the modem each time I switch connections. Thanks anyway, foos.
