how many conflicting stories do we have now?

This is not conflicting news.

The 2 teams could be Rapids and Quakes.

Nice article, but didn't Trecker forget about a certain team in our nation's capital?

Such sales would reduce AEG's stake in the 10-team MLS from five teams to three, leaving the company in control of teams in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

the conflicting part i was talking about was chivas' involvement. we've had Houston and San Diego and san fran and now they have interest in San Jose.

Maybe Vergara's planning on buying the Quakes and relocating them to San Diego.

Chris Bergin's latest info makes it sound like MLS will have one expansion team in 2004, a Houston franchise presumably jointly owned by McNair and Vergara.

I was thinking that could be a possibility...
which then I wonder about the mexican american thing...
the other couple of things were:
is there still talk about stadium renovation or new one in San Jose?
are there rumors in print about San Francisco?
I thought I read someone mentioning, but not sure on that....could be a SJ move towards the bay?

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Absolutely! While a new one would be preferable, it'll more likely be a reconstructed Spartan Stadium.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp There was a blurb about it at the end of an article about the HDC in Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Journal a little while ago, and there were full articles on the subject sometime later in both the San Jose Business Journal and the San Jose Mercury News.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp None that I could find.

I'm not trying to be a troll or anything, but hypothetically, if the Quakes would move to San Diego would that be so bad for you guys? My California geography isn't too sharp, how far would you have to travel to see a game at Qualcomm or even Candlestick? Surely you would still support the team if they stayed within the state right? In any case I don't think the Quakes will be moved. The most logical plan, seeing how they're already involved in stadium negotiations, would be to bring in an investor committed to selling the franchise like Hunt did with KC this year. If they can turn things around surely with a little effort you guys can too.

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp It would be very bad for us, as San Jose and San Diego are about 500 miles apart from each other... there's no way most of us in the Bay Area would be able to make the trek down to San Diego on a weekly or semi-weekly basis!

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp I completely agree with you here! In any case, Chivas apparently won't be buying the Quakes:

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp http://www.cybersoccernews.com/mls/mlsnews/030801garber.shtml

"What was made clear was that Chivas would operate a new team, and not take over an existing MLS franchise. The new Chivas team will be one of two new teams in MLS next year, and Vergara will be one of three new investors in the league."

Candlestick is only 50 miles north. Moving to Candlestick (a total dump ... it will never happen) or elsewhere is San Francisco (not a bad idea but unlikely due to lack of a suitable stadium) wouldn't really a franchise relocation as much as a switch to a new stadium.

San Diego on the other hand as Goodsport says is 500 miles away.

except that they wouldn't be "San Jose" anymore ;)

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Exactly! :(

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp There's really no good reason to relocate the team elsewhere in the Bay Area either - the way the Bay Area is geographically situated, anywhere a sports franchise is located will be an inconvenient location for some.

On Friday's show on Radio Unica, they asked Vergara specifically whether he was going to buy SJ. He said no and reemphasized that he was going to start a new team in a new city.

Of course, that was Friday and negotiations have probably continued through the weekend, so who knows.

It would be more likely that they move San Jose to Cleveland and then take back the name Clash.
Cleveland Clash. :)
Vergara will get a new team. It's just the location that's not settled as he is still interested in a 2nd team in LA, for one thing.

true...

Few things some of you may be able to answer:
How far is it between San Jose and the other 2 cities. I know San Jose is a little south of SanFran and Oakland (and which one is further north?), but not sure exactly. I would like at least a team in the Bay metro....it's a pretty big and interesting area...even if not able to sustain actually in San Jose. Would it be feasible to move to the middle of the three cities? Or even a little north of San Jose (which may be the same area) in a mid city? What would the anticipated fan involvement (increase/decrease attendance) be? Where does the WUSA bay area team play? Lastly, is this how they rank in terms of immediate population (city and immediate suburbs): SanFran, Oakland, SanJose?

I can handle a bit of your post.
The WUSA team in San Jose also plays at Spartan Stadium.
If you are interested in a new stadium closer to the metro san francisco area, you are talking about some of the most expensive real estate on the face of the earth.

YES, IT WOULD.

FOR QUALCOMM TRY 400+ MILES, ONE WAY.
"Surely you would still support the team if they stayed within the state right?"
WRONG!

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Wolves_67 is correct about how expensive land is in the Bay Area. But look at a map... the only place in the Bay Area that's truly "centrally located" for the three big cities is Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay! ;)

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp San Francisco and Oakland are both about 40-50 miles north of San Jose, although each are on the opposite side of the bay from one another. And if the Quakes were to move to either of those two locations, the attendance would most likely decrease (or at best, stay the same).

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Let's put it this way: the U.S. Census Bureau has recently officially redesignated (although we've "unofficially" known this already for quite some time) the San Francisco - Oakland - San Jose population registry as the San Jose - San Francisco - Oakland population registry (I'm not kidding!).

YES, SPARTAN STADIUM IS GENERALLY AT THE SOUTHERN MOST TIP OF WHAT IS CONSIDERED THE BAY AREA. IT IS ACTUALLY SO FAR SOUTH OF BAY AREA PROPER (I.E. SAN FRANCISCO ITSELF) THAT I KNOW FOLKS THAT LIVE UP THERE THAT ABSOLUTELY LOVE SOCCER, BUT WON'T MAKE THE DRIVE (WITH OR WITHOUT THE TERRIBLE BAY AREA TRAFFIC) TO SEE THE GAMES. I LOVE THAT THEY ARE SOUTH, BUT THAT'S CAUSE I LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE.

AND YES, THE REAL ESTATE IS OUT OF THIS WORLD. IT IS MOST EXPENSIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO, BUT THE EAST BAY (I.E. BERKELEY AND OAKLAND) ARE ALSO PRICEY AND SILCON VALLEY WHICH IS BETWEEN SPARTAN STADIUM AND S.F. IS ALSO OUTRAGOUS.

LASTLY, I THINK MORE PEOPLE WOULD ACTUALLY COME OUT TO EARTHQUAKE GAMES IF THEY WERE CLOSER TO THE DENSE POPULATION BASE OF THE BAY AREA. CURRENTY, THEY ARE TOO MUCH OF A DRIVE FOR THOSE THAT CAN AFFORD TICKETS WEEK IN AND WEEK OUT.

YET, IF THEY STAY AT SPARTAN THAT'S JUST FINE BY ME. . .. . .CAUSE I LIVE IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER (JUST KIDDING, BUT I DO LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE) AND WHEN YOU LIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, SPARTAN STADIUM IS WHERE YOU GO TO WATCH SOCCER.
