Looks like Sir Alex is trying to claim the French defender from Rennes. He'd make a nice addition for the backline and would benefit from having both Barthez and Blanc on the squad.

it's dead.
Rennes wont sell because they dont think they can find a replacement in time, said United waited too long.

Rennes defender Julien Escude says he will fight for a dream move to Manchester United.
He wasn't named in the Rennes squad for their upcoming match and has stopped training with the team.

Yeah, he trains on his own now and has been dropped from the first team because "the club will not be taken advantage of", yet instead of excepting a bid they are paying the wage for a player who they arent using. Idiots. French...redundant, i suppose.

Why are all the roads into Paris lined with trees?
So the Germans can march in the shade.

Read this morning that Escude injured himself walking his dog and any transfer deal would now not be concluded by the 31st August deadline and so is probably off.
Similar question to my one of the Premiership section: does anyone know if this deadline is European comps only or applies from here on to the Premiership?

Man Utd's hopes of signing Rennes defender Julien Escude may be over after the player strained ligaments in his left knee while walking his dog.
Wow, that truly is bizarre and untimely. Right up there with Canizares' injury.

Manchester United's hopes of signing Rennes defender Julien Escude may be over after the player strained ligaments in his left knee while walking his dog. He is expected to be out of action for three weeks, making a move to Old Trafford before the 31 August transfer deadline almost impossible.

Well, now that he is injured Man U has no choice but to agree to any transfer fee they ask for, he fits in so well with the rest of the Man U backline right now :D

Could be a clever negotiating tactic.
He wants to leave, but Rennes won't let him go, because they see him as too valuable. Escude dreams up faking an injury so he's no longer worth much to Rennes. And he can't "injure" himself training at a Rennes practice field, where he can be examined by team physios. So he concocts this "story" to force Rennes to sell him to Manchester United.
It makes more sense than actually hurting yourself walking your dog, doesn't it?
