View Full Version : How Do You Back Up Your Media Files?

I'm going to post this both here and in the MTVM forum.

But I was wondering what folks here used for backing up their audio / video / photo files.

I just bought a Western Digital 1 Terabyte My Book hard drive a week ago and started copying all my mp3s, family photos etc. onto it. I also plan to start converting my vinyl pretty soon.

THEN, I read all these gnarly reviews on Amazon about what a piece of dog poo it is. The item is relatively new and there's not a ton of review yet -- CNet for example doesn't have any. But this has totally put the fear of god into me. I don't want to go through all this trouble just to have the thing die.

I'm now contemplating a redundant backup -- an idea I had from the beginning, but the WD drive was more than 2 c-notes to begin with.

So do folks here have any recommendations? I'm not going to buy a new computer, nor do I have the know-how to open up my laptop to add more storage there (or anywhere, for that matter). I'm looking for as simple as possible, consumer products. I know that may be the problem right there, but let me know if you have any ideas.

Thx!

use various options:

burn to DVDs
external HDD
backup to laptop or other computer(research a bit how to transfer)

Anything that is important should be in two different places (and if possible, two different geographic places). If you have things on your computer hard drive and the external hard drive, or the external hard drive and on DVD, then I think you are ok.

I tend to get Maxtor external drives because they have more models that include Firewire which is way better than USB.

I store my files on my HDD. And on occasion DVD. There's no real excuse anymore not to save your files considering DVD's are cheap and majority of cpu have DVD burners. You can get a external HDD 400GB for like $150 at Best Buy...or check Ebay.
