I think what he was trying to say was that (big surprise) the Inferno was able to drown out the travelling contingent from Chicago that came down to Dallas.

They were a spirited group, just outnumbered by the local supporters. I wish more teams had such dedicated fans and traveling support. Their presence in the stadium added even more urgency and tension to the game. Losing with them there to dance on our grave would have just been too terrible! Luckily we own Chicago in the Cotton Bowl, so no worries.

the conferences only serve to set up the #1 and #2 seeds for the playoffs.

numbers 3-8 are the teams (regardless of conference) with the most points that aren't conference winners.

and since the east is so weak, and San Jose has such a lead on any eastern team, San Jose will be teh #1 seed.

So either Columbus, Chicago or New York will be a #2 seed.

and whichever 2 of those 3 teams that don't make the #2 seed will be fighting for 6-8 seeds, as it currently stands.

so we could see a 3v6 matchup of Dallas vs. Chicago or we could be a 2 or a 7 seed, then win our first round matchup and see #3 Dallas in the second round. just to give examples.

if the season ended today, we'd see:


#1 San Jose vs. #8 Columbus
#4 L.A. vs. #5 Colorado


#2 Metrostars vs. #7 Chicago
#3 Dallas vs. #6 Kansas City


and I've grouped them in bracket form, in other words, assuming all higher seeded teams win you have a 1v4 second round matchup, and a 2v3 matchup.

but if the season ended today and if we beat new york in the opening round, then we could play dallas in round 2. or kansas city.

so you see, you're automatically guaranteed a #1 or a #2 seed by winning the conference.

so the conference serves to give you that reward for winning the conference.
