View Full Version : Why are so many so definite about NYFC?

obviously this doesn't apply to everyone, but the overall tone i get from NYFC supporters, is that its in the bag, and pretty much already underway.
i don't even get this level of confidence from philly or st louis supporters who are probably approaching the finish line.
just wondering where the certainty comes from?

We dont think anything is concrete, its more of a hope/desire. We feel good about what Garber said and we are going to do anything to make it a reality. If we dont keep hope that it will happen one day there is no reason to have this forum.

Personally I don't think that its in the bag per se but I really think that our chances are VERY HIGH. I guess its that swagger and optimism that comes from being from NYC. Listen I've always been an optimistic person and I dont tend to say things in an apologetic tone. I dont believe that others control or hold my destiny. I guess that comes thru in my speech and my writing. I've read many posts from all over BS and its the same over and over. IMO, IMHO etc etc etc, it all seems like you HAVE to be apologetic for what you feel. Almost as if you arent allowed to have emotions or feelings.
In the end, I just think that we are confident people that control our own destinies and that comes thru in all the things that we do.

Partly it might be because everyone knows that MLS really wants a second team in the area I take it.
Than you add things like a suitable development coming up, a well known billionaire and major franchise owner admiting to considering the idea and confidence is rocketing.
Heck, itīs more than Philly had a year ago and now they are biting their nails...;)

in the don's state of the league address, only one potential ownership plan was dubbed "a perfect storm"

Odd choice of words but the meaning is clear.
I might add that originally MLS planned for two teams in the New York area so there are reasons for being confident as (to my surprise I must admit) we recently heard that MLS are still using their original expansion plans that are based on media markets...The sustainable ownerships part came after the Florida fiasco I guess.

This is the reason for the Optimism.
Even if we don't get into MLS this round as the 18th team,
To think that NYC will never get a second team is quite ignorant of Garber and the League's desire to build up the north-east and have this region as the stronghold of MLS.
(think about Philly/redbull/DC/NYCFC/Boston/Toronto being in same general area)
Even if it takes awhile, and maybe with another divison of MLS, New York will get a second team. And us starting the Borough Boys now will only strengthen our fanbase when we eventually get a team.
We are dedicated, loyal, and dynamic and the Borough Boys will be there, in our stadium, first game of the season....singing in Unison....
"The Borough Boys!, Go marching in!
When our Boys go marching in!
Oh Lord I want to be Number!
The Borough Boys go marching in!"

i'm sure the don has thought about that too and would like to cash in on that. nyc2 and philly would definately make competition in the northeast more intense at the very least.

1) Garber stated that MLS wants a second team in New York.
2) Mayor Bloomberg is in support of a development plan near the Mets new stadium.
3) The Wilpons (owners of the Mets) have expressed interest in a team. The Mets are well known for having international players on their team, and marketing to the latino community. This is the same community that MLS is going after. Also, the owners of the Mets would be joining the owners of the SF Giants, Colorado Rockies, and the Oakland A's, as investors in MLS.
4) Queens county: immigrants comprise 47.6% of Queens residents.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queens#_note-0) With a population of 2.2 million it is the second most populous borough in New York City (behind Brooklyn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn)) and the tenth most populous county (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_most_populous_counties_in_the_United_States) in the United States. The 2.2 million figure is the highest historical population for the borough.

Now ask yourself how this compares to Atlanta, Rochester, Portland, Oklahoma, or Miami.

Can someone please fill me in on the plans for a second team in NYC, such as stadium, ownership, name, likely starting season, etc..?
Also if you are fans of the league as a whole, don't you think its a concern that there is a big whole in the country where the league isn't represented in the SE? Shouldn't this be filled before we start adding more additional teams to one city? Chivas hasn't been a rousing success at the gate.
One more thing, what MLS team is owned by the owners of the Colorado Rockies? You might be referring to Stan Kroenke who also owns the Nuggets, Avalanche, and the Rapids but the owners of the Rockies are a separate group.
Thanks

What would you consider a failure? Also have you seen the Galaxy-Chivas games? Not that they can only live on those games but I dont think that they are the failure that you make them out to be. Maybe the name. lol

Chivas hasn't been a succes at the gate and they wouldn't have been here in NYC either. The reason is if it is a true NYC team that represents the city and starts its' own tradition and doesn't rip off there name and colors from another team, then the stadium will be packed and rocking every week. Ny wants its' own team.

You are correct. I thought Kroenke owned the Rockies. Colorado is irrelevant anyways. Its a fly over state. I kid I kid. :p

-well as stated earlier, the leading contender is the Wilpons who own the mets. shea and the new citi field share space with flushing meadows park which is pretty much the epicenter for soccer in NYC. even during mets games there are people playing soccer matches. not just 10 or 15 people either. by all accounts, an SSS would be built either on the same site (possiblly replacing shea or converting it to an SSS.) or the auto-salvage yards across the street which the city is tryin to claim eminent domain to level them cause they are a HUUUUUUUUGE eyesore. as to the name, yet to be determined but we're using nycfc or nyfc. start date, God willing 2009 but possibly 2010. yes, we're willing to wait.
-to your second question, i know this can b a tired argument, the SE dosen't show good support for pro sports. College sports, in partuclar college football is king. and the only pro sport that does get substantial support is grid iron football. i know in Miami for example, it's all about the Dolphins and the Hurricanes. the Marlins win 2 world series titles in 10 years and they can't give away tickets. even when the Heat won the NBA title, the excitement (from what i hear from friends in them parts) faded quite fast. as for Chivas, I never thought it was a good idea to name them Chivas because there's plenty of Mexicans who can't stand Chivas. It'd b like if nyc2 were named Chelsea USA, or Arsenal USA, to try and tap into all the ex-pat englishmen who live in the area. you'd b driving away the ones who couldn't stand that particular team
