I just got a new computer. The problem is that the last time I got a new computer, Bush was still looking for ways to connect Sept 11 to Saddam and the Raiders had never heard of the Tuck Rule, so I'm out of practice in performing this process. Do people here have any hints on what I should do to transfer files and applications and accounts between my XP machine and the new Vista machine?
I have a router in-house, if that helps.

If it's only files, I would use an external HD.

Macs can hook together with a fire wire for easy transfer ... pc's don't do something like this? I thought I remember they had a file transfer thingy built into Windows.
yeah ... I'm not much help. but IIRC there's an easy solution to this problem. good luck with it. :)

There may be something built into Vista. As far as XP goes, i'd just transfer the stuff over the wireless network.

But I was wondering about other things than just files. I have a bazilion different utilities I installed over the years and I probably have no memory of 2/3rds of them. Do I just basically keep my old computer around for the next year waiting until I figure out I am missing something and then copy it over?
And the Vista file explorer program stinks.

It takes some getting used to. Some things that happened automagically before, now take an extra click (such as viewing the list of files in a folder selected in the left pane. OTOH, I'm getting used to using the search feature.
The biggest PIA that I found is that I am unable to view the XP systems on my network using Vista so I am not able to connect from my Vista notebook to a printer attached to one of the XP boxes. Has anyone figured out that trick?

Use Window easy transfer and do it over your network.
This is a wireless age broder, a wireless age...

Yeah, it's a wireless age but if you are going to be transferring a lot of settings, documents, files and such you should probably connect a cable in there; things will go twice as fast as wireless or better.
Under XP ; Accessories > System Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Window
I'm not sure how much will work with Vista, though. I used the above to copy settings from one computer to another once (only once). The process is somewhat painless.
You'll have to let us know in a couple of months if you like Vista or not. Vista is 0 for 3 with friends and co-workers.

What I'm saying does work from XP -> Vista.
He/She really needs to research as the information is all out there.
