View Full Version : DOGSO Question

In watching Villa-Chelsea on Boxing Day, there was a DOGSO call on Villa at the end of the first half that had me asking the following question.
Does the proximity of the 'keeper have anything to do with whether you make a dogso call or not?
In this case the defender for Villa took down Ballack for Chelsea and he was clearly last defender but the the 'keeper was no more than a yard from the defender and the attacker. Would that play into your decision making, or would the 'keeper's position not matter at all?
In my opinion, there was an opportunity to score, but it certainly didnt appear to be OBvious because of the position of the 'keeper.
Thoughts?

Incident starts at the 0:36 mark here: http://profile.imeem.com/UjpwMAK/video/AxMUMBsa/chelsea_aston_villa_12_sports_video/
EDIT: Could you take into account a keeper? Of course, you could. If it's more or less a loose ball and the keeper has anywhere near a 50% chance of getting their first, then certainly that would negate the "O" in "DOGSO."
But, I don't think that's the case here. Pause the video that I linked to somewhere around/between 0:53 and 0:54. You will see a still frame where the keeper is already committed to a slide and the attacker is in the process of being fouled. The minimum distance between the keeper and the ball (depend on where you pause it) is 3 yards and is probably more like 5-6 yards when the foul actually occurs. If not fouled, it is highly likely (nevermind conceivable) that the attacker could have rounded the keeper with a dribble or even chose to slot the ball around him.
The keeper did a good acting job at the end, trying to sell the fact that he was close enough to pick the ball up.

I'd be interested in who made the call. The CR is nicely positioned to see the play, but with the crowd of players not sure he can make the last defender portion of the call. Wonder if the AR tossed in some information?

Remember the 4 D's:
Direction: obvious
Distance to Goal: Approx 11m out, well w/in credible striking distance
Distance from Ball: Right on the strikers foot - well w/in his control
Defenders: Striker just beat the last defender and only had GK to beat.
Clearly a DOGSO and good call by referee. Does anyone think any ref in MLS would make that call, save B. Hall?
As always Mass. Ref, spot on with the info and good links. Nice work!
