hahaha Mexico is 5th and the US is 9th while Italy is in 14th, England is 10th, and Portugal is 16 what a joke.

These rankings are so stupid. They are pretty pointless. I mean, look at all the teams the USA are ahead of!

i don't think that the fact that the usa is 9th is the most shocking aspect of these rankings... it's the fact that mexico is number 5. now that's a ************ing joke.

You guys must have missed the Gold Cup. Mexico just beat Brasil twice and Colombia in the Confederation championship. The USA gained on their wins and close match with Brasil. Italy and England have not been impressive in their recent UEFA qualifying, and have not played much in recent months. UEFA qualifying for Portugal 2004 continues in September and October. The UEFA winners and the Portugal 04 qualifiers and victors should move up significantly, as Mexico and USA won't have meaningful games until second round WC06 qualifying in second half 04.
The FIFA formula is weighted on recent wins. It assumes a balanced schedule which does not exist. Most of the European teams haven't played many meaningful matches in the last year.

Brasil was not in the Gold Cup. The Brasil Under 23 team was. Mexico and USA should be expected to beat a bunch of Brazilian teenagers.

Unfortunately, they FIFA rankings can't take that into account. The tournament, for (better or) worse, was the CONCACAF championship. CONCACAF invited Brazil. Doesn't matter what team Brazil sent, they're considered Brazil's national team in the rankings.
Picky detail: "teenagers" are 13 - 19 year olds. U-23 includes up to age 22.

Why is Germany so far back they shouldnt be that far back they are the World Cup runner ups
