One of the first and fewer caribbean nations to ever qualify for an World Cup (Germany' 74). There hasn't been any significant news about Haiti football in the last years. Haven't they played a friendly against Peru recently? How was it? What are their expectations for the next WCQs? Let's make this the official thread for Haiti news and results.

Haiti doesn't exactly have widespread internet...

They are a country with talented players, but few ressources to develop them properly. They can pull off some decent results and are, with Cuba, the two rising countries in the Caribbean. Playing in Port-au-Prince can't be fun for visitors!

We'll see next WCQ how they have progressed.

Feb 2000 they tied Peru 1-1. I think they also lost 2-0 to Ecuador in the 2001 (?) Gold Cup.

Haiti played a Brazil national team in 1999. I think it was the Brazil U21, but I can't remember. Haiti lost 4-3.

Actually they beat Ecuador 2-0. They're in a slump though. Golman Pierre, their traditional scorer the past few years, is past his prime. Probably rebuilding the team after the failure of the Gold Cup Qualifying campaign.

Haiti had a 2-0 lead (in the 77th minute) over Venezula a few days ago and they still found a way to lose 3-2.

Haiti Olympic U-23 club beat Dominican Replublic 1-0 in the first leg of qualification for Olympic games in Athens in 2004.

Ah, Haiti!! They had a marvelous run in the '70s, qualifying in WC '74, but coming quite close to qualifying in 1970, 1978, and even in 1982.

1970: Mexico was the host country, and automatic entrant, so all of the other CONCACAF countries who had usually been eliminated by Mexico had a golden opportunity. Haiti first topped a group that included Guatemala and T&T, then followed that by eliminating the US (!) in a home-and home (2-0, 1-0). Haiti forced El Salvador into a three game playoff, losing 1-2 and winning 3-0 (the rules at the time did not call for goal differential and the like), before dropping a 1-0 decision in nuetral Jamaica. {As a result, ES qualified for WC '70 to complete the field of 16 teams--incredibly both CONCACAF teams were placed in the same group in Mexico '70!!!!!}.

1974: Haiti defeated Puerto Rico, 7-0 and 5-0, to advance to a six-team group final that was not the home-and-home series that we are familiar with today, but series of games played over a three-week period. This group final, for one solitary team to qualify out of CONCACAF, had already been scheduled to be held in . . .Haiti! Haiti won its first four games (and qualified for Germany '74) before losing to Mexico in its last, meaningless game. {Mexico had been tied by Guatemala, 0-0, tied by Honduras, 1-1, and lost to T&T, 4-0!}.

1978: After getting past the Dominican Republic, 3-0 and 3-0, and Cuba in three games (1-1, 1-1, and 2-0 in nuetral Panama, Haiti again advanced to the group finals. Like in 1974, the group finals was a six-team affair held over a slightly longer than two week period. Only this time, the group finals was held completely in Mexico, and Mexico prevailed, winning all five games including 4-1 vs. Haiti. Haiti finished with three wins, a tie and the loss to Mexico to finish in second place--in 1978, again only one CONCACAF team could qualify for the WC, held in Argentina.

1982: After topping a group that included T&T and Netherland Antillies, Haiti's "golden era" came to a crashing end when they finished in sixth, and last, place in the group finals. (This edition of the group finals was played over a three-week period in Honduras and again, the home nation came out on top. In 1982, however, the WC had expanded to 24 teams, and so two CONCACAF teams were able to qualify for Spain '82: Honduras and El Salvador.

My only other contribution to this post (and if you've been reading this far you deserve to know a real trivia treat) is this:

In 1950, when the US defeated England in, perhaps, the greatest WC upset of all time, the lone goal of the game came from Joe Gaetjens, a header in the 37th minute. Gaetjens was a native of Haiti, one of three players on the US team who were not American citizens, but were holders of what were then called "first papers" (the "green card" of today). Gaetjens never did become an American citizen. He returned to Haiti, played for Haiti vs. Mexico in WCQing in 1953, then disappeared in 1964. He is believed to have been a victim of Papa Doc Duvalier's secret police. (You'll probably hear a lot about Joe Gaetjens in the upcoming movie, "The Game of their Lives" which will probably be released in 2004.)
