"SoccerTimes was told off-the-record by an MLS official that the top candidate would be New York City with a soccer-specific stadium built adjacent to Citi Field, the Mets' new stadium, set to open next to Shea Stadium in Flushing, Queens, in 2009. The league envisions a bitter rivalry between this club and the New York Red Bulls, who are based in New Jersey. League sources admitted, however, getting this done would be hugely complicated and largely dependent on the development of Citi Field."

I would love to know how credible the source is! Thats a good find though. I hear a lot of rumors that Wilpon is going to do it.

By the way - drove by citi field the other day - it looks amazing!

It sounds like Garber and the league really want NYC more than anything. They want to have a NY derby, and by adding a second team to the region I think they will gain a strong hold on the NY market. Think about it the NY market has 2 NBA teams, 2 NFL teams, and 2 MLB teams. And each of those has a great rivalry with the other. There is no question about there being enough fans. Each borough could have its own team and have a big fanbase! If the NY area can support three NHL teams without a problem, then 2 MLS teams wouldn't have a problem either.

I think that this is a crucial moment to do realize to all ( Wilpon, Garber, Bloomberg etc ) that New York City WISHES and above all DESERVES a soccer team in Queens.
Is it possible to distribuite thousands of leaflets in the subways, buses, ferryboats etc to explain to million of New Yorkers that there is a real possibility that in only 2 years NYC can have a true soccer team in MLS and that is fundamental their help ( to sign the petition for example )

NOVEMBER 2008 : MLS chooses NYCFC
MARCH 2010 : Begins the dream

I hope we both have a franchise and a stadium ready like Toronto. And we dont have to wait that long. That is unlikely tho

That is actually a very good idea that I haven't heard mentioned. Advertising NYC FC on the subway in certain areas would do the BB a lot of good.

in all honesty - when you get something in the subway - how often do you hold onto that! People on the subway are mostly in a rush and they wont take the time out to listen to us! Thats just my opinion!

Im more in favor of handing out flyers at matches locally. We are going to have to buy these flyers - lots of people in the subway will throw them away.

Also - talked to someone about taking out an add in smaller newspapers locally - that might work too!

I've got several ideas about marketing the team. All the ideas listed so far are great. I know that you cant put flyers on peoples cars anymore but you can hand out leaflets. Basically you have to be where the sleeping giant is going to be. Thats where you concentrate your efforts. Also I believe that we have to market locally to the spanish media. There are other media as well that need attention but I speak about the spanish media the most because thats the one that I understand the best. Its truly a lay up because the vibe is already in the streets, you just have to establish a local destination point for information on events, meetings, news, games etc etc etc.

I dont want to say its going to be easy either, but its going to be a nice healthy and positive challenge in this upcoming new year.

Hopefully Wilpon will be able to successfully come to terms with Peppe Pinton and name New York City's MLS team the New York Cosmos.

Personally I would love to see the Cosmos return to the American soccer scene in any form. (watch the slew of naysayers now! lol) But its not a sticking point for me. I know that the support will be there. Will there be MORE support if the name is the COSMOS. I can almost guarantee it.

The more I think about it the more I think it would be a good idea if they did use the Cosmos name. No matter what anyone says the name does carry weight and has more history then any name in US pro soccer. That being said as long as we get a team I dont care what they name it.We'll go against RB by naming our team Vitamin Water SC.

LOL LOL Imagine that!

Vitamin Water is based out of Whitestone, Queens. You can literally spit at Shea from the Vitamin Water offices. The owner is from Queens, Mike I believe his name to be. How classic would that be.

The Battle for Enerygy Drink Supremacy! lol lol

As anti soccer as possible and a marketers dream come true. lol lol

if i understood correctly, the article said that eventhough that Philly and St. Louis are the desired #16 and 17, their situations aint lined up they way the league would care for. To repeat what i said in another thread, it wouldn't suprise me if (as the article said) that citi field is up and running sooner that later, than maybe if Wilpon hurries his ass up we could possibly leap frog into #16. but by all accounts it looks like the league wants Philly, St. Louis, and NYC2 to round out the table.
