Jol Takes Issue With Tottenham Treatment
Ex-Spurs boss Martion Jol has shed new light on the circumstances of his acrimonious departure from the club.
The big Dutchman’s love affair with the London club came to a abrupt end in late October, and it is obvious that he is still annoyed at how the divorce was handled. Jol was told of his sacking after the Uefa Cup defeat against Getafe, but it was common knowledge in the dressing room, going public throughout the game.
"Just before the match against Getafe, Berbatov came up to me and said 'sorry coach'," Jol revaled.
"I thought he was referring to the fact that he had not been playing well. Apparently he knew I was sacked."
Jol also admitted that the arrival of Damien Comolli as sporting director was the beginning of the end for him.
"From the first day it was an awkward working relationship. I was not his choice and he was not my choice," he added.
"For the most important part of my job I was depending on the people around me at Spurs who were buying the players.
"Spurs is a fantastic club with fantastic supporters but I often think 'if only I'd been allowed to run the club the way I wanted it'."
Jol ended with some critical words for his successor Juande Ramos, due to his choice of coming forward with the news that he had been approached by Tottenham even while the Dutchman was still the coach at White Heart Lane.
"It was not the most elegant thing to do to a colleague, making public that he had received a big offer from Tottenham," Jol added.
"From that moment on I knew I had a massive battle with my players every day.
"Every day the players asked me if I was staying as a manager but I did not know the answer myself."
