I'm going on a 3 week trip to Central America in June. I'm hoping some of you could recommend some decent hotel rooms with A.C. for less than $30 a night. I've stayed in many a $10 a night room in Mexico so I'm not shocked by budget hotels. I speak passable Spanish, i.e. I can have extended conversations and understand just about everything, but my grammar is far from perfect. I have a lot of experience traveling internationally, but mostly in Mexico. Is the Spanish in Central America much different?

From what I've heard...Guatemalans, Salvadorans and Hondurans tend to use "vos" a lot, no?
In regards to your question about hotels...I am sure with a couple of dollars, you should be better than good in terms of hotel quality.

Yep, especially us Salvadorans. Guatemalans tend to talk most like Mexicans, while Salvadorans and Hondurans talk similar, yet we have different slang.

Costa Rica and Panama are obviously the most expansive places, but they have cheap, clean hotels in most cities/towns. All along the Atlantic Coast of Central America English is spoken more than Spanish, and in Belize its´ the official language. Throughout Costa Rica English is taught in schools and many people are fluent in it, so there wouldn´t be much of a problem there.

I'm not too worried about the language. I'm very confident in my ability to be understood and I understand just about everything, from radio to television programs. The slang thing will probably be the most difficult. At the moment I'm living in Mexico so I use Spanish every day.

vos is more informal, people talking to him will use usted instead, but vos is very common

if you only have a couple days in each country, i'd skip Guate City and head to Antigua which is about 45 minutes from the airport. it's the best place in CA. there's a range of hotel choices and you can catch a game, although they have been relegated from the top league for a few years.
