View Full Version : Open Cup Missed Opportunity

IMO, the Open Cup matches ought to be held Saturday night.
Sure, the MLS clubs will be w/o their best players. But, the LDs and BMs of the world usually rest, anyway.
The lower-division clubs could've promoted the hell out of this thing....

Honestly. US Soccer and everyone else that is involved with the Open Cup have missed promoting all of it.
I still think that those MLS Clubs as well as A-League clubs who have TV contracts should be allowed to broadcast their clubs in the 3rd & 4th Round, allowing Fox Sports World to go from the Quarterfinals all the way to the final.
That way promoting the tournament on the local level. In this case less is not more, you have to do more to make it good.
But then again I don't work for the USSF or MLS

I just found out like 5 minutes ago that Dallas was playing in Wilmington tonight. If I had known about it I would have been there in a heartbeat. :(

U missed a great upset, on second thoughts maybe it wasn't such an upset, as many predicted a Hammerheads win.
A PSL team in the quarters, Well done you Hammers, bring on DC United.

This is all because US Soccer doesn't do ANY promotion and could care less about the US Open Cup. Most people at USSF don't even know there is a Women's US Open Cup. Forget about the average futbol fan.
All the USSF cares about now is the National Teams, not development, helping grow anything and definitely not the USOC.

IMO
What a great, MISSED opportunity to promote---especially when A-League and PDL teams meet MLS teams!
I agree that they should do more to promote this event. Most people have never heard of the Lamar Hunt Open Cup. And even less have heard of the Womens Open Cup.
Advertising is minimal since the USOC is right in the middle of the regular season. Also, most of the games are played during the week, not weekends.

The USOC final should be a doubleheader each year with a high profile USMNT match with attendance od 40,000+.
This would give more prize money for USOC participant teams, more exposure and prestige for the OC.

Where is the USFA when you need them?

Good idea, but tough to do in practice. Next year, the USMNT will be so busy playing in WCQ's that adding another friendly will be rough. And, would you want to play your "national championship" final with players missing for NT duty?
My idea for a promotion would be to have a nine-day span (from a Saturday to the next week's Sunday) for a soccer week of high-profile games, in one city (maybe using two stadia). This would include the semi's and final's of the LHUSOC (spread a week apart), the various All-Star games (MLS, WUSA, A-League if they want, even a college one), a USWNT game, a USMNT game, and so on. Every night would be on TV somewhere (ESPN-2, FSW, Pax ?, HDnet ?, ...).

If you pick out the final matchday far enough in advance and set it on an international friendly date, and clear MLS games from that day, there woudl be no problem whatsoever.
And any US (or otherwise) internationals on teams in the Final simply wouldn't be released for friendlies that day.
It's a good idea.
There may actually be a taste of this if Chicago wins their semi -- it's widely assumed/anticipated/guaranteed that if they win, they will host in Soldier Field on the 15th in a doubleheader with Mexico v Uruguay.
