Our group for the 2008 Copa Libertadores has been drawn just minutes ago. We are in group 5, which consists of the following teams:
River Plate
Chile 2 (Undetermined team for now)
San Martin (PER)
Mexico 2 (Undetermined)
Aguante River!

Nice to see that Peru has a team named after San Martin.
I never heard of them before.
The group looks easy for River, but lets wait and see who the other teams are. Chilean teams always get up for Argentine teams, and Mexico has some strong teams as well.

why does river gets such an easy group if they did so bad last season.... the comenbol is a joke and a mafia. fing Ath Nacional won both tournies in colombia and has to fing face Santos and #2 team in Colombia and audux italiano I think..
see this as an easy pass for River but would prefer us to be in a hard group so we dont think were the shit and get to the 2nd round and then face a real team and get spanked

Hey don't start sounding like "mexicano amargo" the draws were drawn. The river group ain't that easy man. If our underachieving attitude is still around this can be fatal. There ain't a mafia man....there are just teams with deeper rosters and killer instinct and teams just happy to be there.

First off, the last season goes into count for the 2009 Libertadores: this Libertadores counts the 2006-2007 season. Second, the Argentine and Brazilian teams are the seeds of each group, meaning that there will be one Argentine or Brazilian team in each of the eight groups. There was no way of "favoring" River, and there was no conspiracy against Atletico Nacional.
As for the group, it may seem easy, but it could actually turn out to be really tough. The Mexican team could be America, Toluca, etc., and those teams tend to be improving and have been playing very well in South American International tournaments lately. The Chilean team, can also be very good, just look at how Colo Colo have been doing lately. And finally, Universidad San Martin. I can't go off and say they will be a tough team like the other two, but the altitude will play against River when we visit them, not to mention how we've mysteriously been having problems against small teams (*cough* Caracas *cough*) lately.
Crzd, stop being so amargo. You claim to like River, but you always enter our forums talking shit.

Good point, a good Chilean and Mexican team and all of a sudden things don't seem as easy as they first looked. We will have to wait and see how the team adapts with its new manger and see who they bring in.
That said I would still expect River to be favored to advance. :)

Universidad San Martin is from Lima ... 0 mts above sea level.

With yesterday's win over Cruz Azul by penalties, America (MEX) have qualified to the Libertadores as Mexico 2 and therefore will be in River's group. As for Chile 2, the spot will occupied by Universidad Catolica.
Group 5
America (MEX)
River Plate (ARG)
Universidad San Martin (PERU)
U. Catolica (CHI)
Looks like a complicated group, in my opinion. I don't expect a fracaso such as the one we saw last year, but it won't be an easy six games for River either.

the only team here that to me seems like a threat is America.... cause of Cabanas and Ochoa... hope we have a good keeper or strengthend our defense cause last year our defense was pitiful
but this is what makes me mad about the sudamericana... they shouldnt allow the same teams to play both tournies. I remember when Once Caldas won the Copa Lib and beat boca.... and then 2 months later Boca just went to Copa Sudamericana and won...
think the Sudamericana should be like the UEFA cup where midtable teams go.... if BArca , Inter went to UEFA they would win every year.... and think its BS that America and Boca get to go each year to Sudamericana

Does it also piss you off that River gets an invite to the Copa Sudamericana every year as well?

I dont think its fair because they dont deserve it... no team deserves to be in a tournie just because they are a big name... that doesnt help the tournie or the team. Look at how bad Boca did and how Sao Pablo didnt even try to beat Millos because Sudamericana wasnt a big enough tournie for them ...
the only reason river took it seriously is cause we havent done anything in a long time, and it was the only way for the coach to keep his job

You are right, it should, according to the CONMEBOL it is, but we all know that in reality it's far from being such.
Also it's funny to think that besides Boca the Sudamericana was always won by 2nd tier teams.

Gentlemen let's try and get this thread where it belongs. It was started by Loco solely for the purpose of discussing River's campaign in this year's Copa Santander Libertadores of 2008. Now, with that being said, we know now what our group consists of. Like Loco stated, it's a complicated group We should qualify for the next round, but those trips to Mexico City, Lima, and Santiago aren't going to be easy. Club America have lost some key players, but they have also brought in some good ones as well. They also have two capable forwards in Cabanas and Lopez that have to be taken seriously. They'll probably be our main threat for 1st place in the group.

Man, I am becoming your biggest nitemare. Told you in a different thread, a few weeks back, that Simeone's teams are unbalanced and end up defending with 2. Those risks were what made Estudiantes Champs, but it is unorthodox in most football environments.
Tonite, River was not goleado because Ponzio gave his heart out and saved 3 clear goal situations. And Carrizo also saved a couple. The rest of the team was MIA.

El presidente de River, José María Aguilar, trató de quitarle dramatismo a la derrota sufrida ante Universidad San Martín, un equipo que tiene apenas 4 años de historia y muy pocos hinchas.

What a way to start the tournament. What an embarrassing finish.
Do these players realize that they lose more than win? What is happening here? Frankly I am shocked at this result. Utter disbelief. What a lack of desire to win. My goodness I am speechless.

our formation doesnt work !!! also why bench ur best striker from the year before.....
Falcao is injured half the year why bench him when he is healthy .... especially if they think they will sell him for 17 million ... his value is just going down
i realize he asked for Abreu but doesnt mean he needs to start him if he isnt working
the whole team was just awful... 2-0 to a peruvian team !!! :(
I was excited before this game thinking River could do it this season and was going to be my #1 fav, considering I dont see much of a shot for any of the Colo teams to make it to the 2nd round..... and after yesterday ... doesnt seem like any of my teams will make it

Though I didn't get a chance to see this game due to my recent move from San Diego to Orlando, the only real positive to take away from this game is the fact it was the first game, and not the last. If this were the last game in the first round and we just got knocked out, then we should be pissed as hell. But remember mates, this was the first game in the tournament with five left in the first round. Maybe a loss like this is what this team needs. A nice wake up call to show that every game should be played as it were a final.
