Okay, so after months of irritation, frustration, and downright anger, I've decided to ask the great people of BigSoccer if they can help me with my problem.
I've had all the variations of MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger and have never had a problem uploading a display picture. Every size and filetype has worked out nicely, no trouble. A couple months ago I reformatted my computer, reinstalled all my programs, blah blah blah, and that's all fine and dandy.
But here's the situation. When I reinstalled Windows Live Messenger and tried to upload a display picture, it always gives me the same error message:

I've been to EVERY forum that tries to analyze this problem AND contacted Microsoft support. I've deleted the folder in %appdata%, tried briefly disabling my antivirus software, modifying the registry, everything. I've tried everything in Google I've come across, and even Microsoft tech support's suggestions didn't work. And I know damn well the image files are valid.
This is what I get when I go to the display picture menu:

And in the IMs themselves, it doesn't even show me the box with the generic blue blob man, even though my contacts say it shows up for them.

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated. Not having a display picture isn't that big of a deal I guess, but the fact that this is a simple fix for most people and none of those solutions are working for me gets under my skin.
