Manchester City are closing in on a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk striker Nery Castillo on loan.

Castillo was a target for Sven Goran Eriksson in the summer, but opted to join Shakhtar on a five-year contract from Olympiakos.

However, he has struggled to settle in Ukraine and recently angered his coach Mircea Lucescu after missing a penalty against Neftyanik when he refused to hand the ball to regular spot-kick taker Cristiano Lucarelli.

He was left out of the UEFA Champions League defeat at Celtic last month as a result of the incident and could now be on his way to the Premier League in January.

I for one would welcome him into the squad; I am not surprised he has been struggling at Shakhtar given the sorts of clubs and climates he has been accustomed to and think he will have a much easier time in Manchester. He would add a dimension of pace we so desperately need, though he would most likely be more effective if we could sign an excellent holding striker. *Cough* Owen *Cough*

Speaking of which, apparently Sam has no intention of spiriting away Owen in January. I do not know if I or any Toon supporter should believe him, though. Financing future purchases could make a transfer of Owen very tempting. That said, Owen's fee will most likely balloon given our latest press concerning SGE's budget. I only wish the PM could keep his mouth shut.

Sam expects to keep Owen (http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11679_2972955,00.html)

What do you lads think?

so glad he is leaving Shakhtar and joining Man City, he was never really given a good chance there and the coach seems to have it out for him, the captain and of the squad didnt see the big deal in him wanting to take that pk, if he made it there wouldnt be as much drama

he likes to go out there and give it his all, think he was pretty frustrated in Ukraine cuz they signed him giving him the impression he would be a star and then they would only play him 15 mins at the end of games if even that

The little article under his pics says everything is done. He will be on loan for 1 year.

I think Boj could be a much better "Holding Striker* than Owen could be, Owen has always played off defenders.

I think Castillo could be a good option, Thought we had heard the last of him after he signed for Shaktar last transfer period.

According to the website Mediotiempo (which quotes the agent of Nery Castillo as the source) the player signed at midnight in time of London with Manchester City. He signed for a year long loan from Shaktar, with a clause that allows Manchester City to buy the player at the end of the loan.

Castillo would join the squad on training sessions this Saturday, but won't be introduced until Monday.

That isn't true. In Ukraine now +4 C and in Spring/Summer much warmer than in England

giving him the impression he would be a star
Who said that? Shakhtar always have better players in Nery's position. And Nery lose the challenge. Nery isn't a star for Shakhtar, prolly in MC he would be a star in that level

Ukraine isn't Nordic country and have are normal european climate. Orange color on the Shakhtar kit also symbolizes the sun

I was unaware that playing off defenders disqualifies one from being a holding striker. In fact, from my experience, the best holding or possession strikers have a tendency to play in space against backs in order to open up box-passing and movement.

I am not exactly sure what you believe a holding striker to be, but playing at defenders, 1v1, and then hurriedly putting a shot on goal is not the sort of thing a holding striker often does; it is the style of play Bojinov and Castillo employ, both of which have aggressive instincts. Those instincts are perfect to pair with the likes of Owen or even Mpenza (though to an obviously much more limited degree) who look for space, cause a mistake in the backline, or just find a good chance with a cross.

you obviously dont understand what "giving him the impression" means, let me break it down for you, No one had to tell him anything for him to get the impression (which means A vague notion, remembrance, or belief), if they offered him so much money, more than other clubs it would leave a player to believe wow they really want me there, but then he gets there and the coach obviously didn't feel he fit in his plans and benches him, and now apparently neither does Lucarelli, who is also saying, well more like pleading for someone to get him the f out of there, even though hes had a good year, seems to me theres something wrong with that organization

anyways much luck to Castillo, I was hoping he would have come to Man City in the summer, it is a much better fit for him and he would be under a way better coach

Judging from the excitement in the Mexico forums, I am guessing we'll see another jump in traffic around here.

Nery is a bit overrated for the 25mil $ shaktar paid for him, but a loan deal is a great move to see if he can fight off Bianchi and force his way into the starting 11. Stikers are such a hit and miss in the prem. Much easier to buy D and quality MF's.

I believe Shaktar paid $20 million, but yes, hopefully he does good in this loan.

Oh, no, not at all. It's just that there was a huge increase in visitors to this forum at the beginning of the season, what with new ownership and the arrival of SGE. I figured we were going to plateau for a good long while, but when I heard about Castillo, I went over to the Mexico forum and saw how pleased people were. I'm definitely in the more-the-merrior column.

I was able to see Castillo live (Mexico-Brazil in Foxboro, MA), and I was very impressed with him, so I'm delighted he's joining City. I'm also hoping Telemundo might pick up some City games on tape delay the way they've been doing with Stuttgart and PSV this season.
