The Apertura 2007 is over and Lanus is the worthy champion. An irregular tournament that witnessed 3 small teams ending at the top of the table.

Who remembers today the South West derby played for Round 5, between Banfield and Lanus? As all derbies, it was a 6 point game. The curiosity is that it probably was the most important derby played between these 2 teams ... it defined the Champion of the tournament. And it was one of the best games of the entire tournament.

Had Banfield won the game, which they deserved, it would had meant that both Banfield and Lanus would had needed to play an extra game to define the title of the Apertura. The 2 historic rivals from the South West tied at 35 points. Tigre, the lone North representative in 1st Division, a point short with 34.

How much more frustration could the Banfield fans feel with Javier Collado every time thay remember the game? Diego Herner was red carded in the 27th of the first half ... a drastic red that changed the momentum of the game. Banfield was up 1-0 thanx to a pk from Luccetti. Then came Sand who started to write his heroe pages for Lanus. Two goals ala Van Basten. In between and after, Banfield spilled chances over and over ...

Tuesday August 28th, 2007. A date that should be remembered in the 195 years of history of these two clubs. It defined who rules for the next 6 months the South West ... and the national champion.

In theory that "derby" is made up because both haven't faced their rivals in a long while. In reality Banfield's classic is Los Andes and Lanús classic is Talleres RE both in the 3rd division, those are the classics however it's true because the historical clubs from the southern zone of greater Buenos Aires hold rivalries which other, you should include the kinds of Temperley, El Porvenir and such in there.

Certainly Lanus v Talleres RE is the most direct derby, they were even fused together at some point. But being Banfield and Lanus the 2 teams that are in the top division for long enuff, nowadays they are considered the SW derby in the top flight.

Yes but at some point i think that's a derby like San Lorenzo-Boca. But then again Lanús-Banfield makes more sense than many other derbies they make up just because.
