MLS plans to expand to 16 teams by 2010 and could feature as many as 18 clubs by 2012. Expansion conversations continue with more than a dozen communities throughout the United States and Canada. Commissioner Garber will discuss each market at his year-end state of the league address on November 16 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C

Interesting....

Garber speaking on expansion.
At 3:33:

"The next team will be either Philadelphia or St. Louis. That will be hopefully finalized in the next 30 to 60 to 90 days. Seattle and St. Louis or Philadelphia will play in 2009. And the next teams after that, teams 17 and 18, hopefully finalized by the end of '08. Those teams will be $40 million."

One of us is in. One of us gets screwed out of $10 mil.

Oh great..........."60 to 90 days" seems to never be far from this league.

In this case, I believe it is more likely 45-60 days. I believe if either Philadelphia or St. Louis get their issue sorted then they will be announced at the draft on January 18th.

(Hence our plans to attend)

Aside from the message Garber gave...

I can't believe we have a guy like Garber as our commissioner. Great guy, smart guy, and someone who knows his way around the sporting landscape of this country. We're lucky to have him.

What a long way from the days of Doug Logan.

It's a shame his word means nothing.
He will say whatever he needs to say at the moment.

I tell you what though, financially speaking, he knows how to run a league. He helped keep that NFL europe going all those years.

Which, unfortunately, is one way of keeping any major organization/corporation chugging along. But it does't mean that at least some of what he says isn't genuine.

That also doesn't mean he's not, by all accounts, doing a great job. I might know f**k all about the inner workings of MLS and whether or not people think Garber is a good guy to work with, etc.; but it's obvious that his public presence is always welcome and he's learned how to navigate his way through the morass that is American soccer...while maintaining his league's steady forward progress.

Major League Soccer president Mark Abbott spent Wednesday in Miami meeting with Mayor Manny Diaz and city commissioners, and said he left feeling ''very pleased'' with what he heard about plans for a 25,000-seat soccer stadium at the Orange Bowl site. The $100 million stadium would receive half of its funding from an MLS ownership group.

''I definitely think it's fair to say that this stadium proposal, if it passes, bumps Miami up on the expansion list,'' Abbott said Thursday. ``We have been talking with Mayor Diaz for some time about getting funding for a stadium in Miami, but the last few weeks things have really come into focus. We believe the funding package is a compelling one.''

"Miami would not get an MLS team before 2010, Abbott said. Seattle is getting a team in 2009, and one other market likely would get a team ahead of Miami.

Among the other markets MLS is considering for expansion: Atlanta, Las Vegas, Montreal, New York (a second team), Philadelphia, Portland, St. Louis and Vancouver."

Let's get that funding passed in Harrisburg!

Unless JFA changes its name to mean Jolley Franklin Apple juice, I doubt you'll be drinking it in my house. ;)

But the thought is appreciated.

Do you guys know when an announcement will be if you get a team or not? I suppose it's not a matter of IF, but more so WHEN - 2009 or 2010.

MLS's deadline is the end of January (next month).

Rumor has it that MLS will (try) to announce Team #16 at the MLS Superdraft, which is in Baltimore on Jan. 18th.

ndw0f9 just posted this article over in the St. Louis boards: New stadium could boost Miami's chances of MLS return (http://uk.reuters.com/article/worldFootballNews/idUKSP23259920071220?pageNumber=2&virtualBrandChannel=0). It says in it that MLS will decide in March.

First time I've heard that. Wonder where they got that info.

I have no idea where Reuters is getting March from. I was going to contact the author but there is no source cited.

Here is a quote by Garber at the MLS Cup State of the League address:

Garber went on to say the league's plan is to have 16 teams in 2009, but added, "If we are unable to confirm a 16th team by the end of the year, I would think by January 31st, we will likely make the decision to play with 15 teams in 2009."
