What is your favourite England goal?

In the time when we have to reflect on tournament gone by as we are no longer going to one, I say we find the greatest England goal. Greatest might be the wrong word, but the favourite goal that has been scored by England. To vote you will probably remember what you have seen and not necessarily some of the goals you may not have been alive for, but ill put them on anyway.

There are a number aren’t there?

Michael Owen against Argentina in 1998, the goal that catapulted him to world stardom, as was his third in the demolition of Germany in 2001. I also have to mention his goal against Brazil in the quarter final of the world cup 2002.

Then in the same Germany match you had Stevie Gerrard scoring form long range just before half time.

David Beckham has scored some important and spectacular goals, the penalty against Argentina in 2002, but obviously you have to say the free kick against Greece in the final minute was just superb.

Others are Geoff Hurst’s third in the world cup final, Bobby Charlton against Mexico, Paul gasgione vs. Scotland in 1996, how about Joe Cole against Sweden in the 2006 world cup, Rooney against Croatia, Shearer against Holland, there are too many to name so I will list them in a poll, I can only do ten so, my bets England goals, sorry if your isn’t there, but I think the list pretty much covers it.

Here is the description of the goal, just vote on your favourite one.

* Geoff Hurst – Hatrik goal in 1966 world cup final Vs. West Germany
* Michael Owen – Against Argentina in 1998, his solo effort that deserved to win the game.
* Michael Owen – His Hatrik goal against Germany when we beat them 5 -1.
* David Beckham – His free kick in the final minute against Greece.
* Steven Gerrard – Firing home before the half time whistle against Germany in 2001.
* Paul Gasgione – Against Scotland in 1996. Over the player and a volley into the corner.
* Bobby Charlton – VS Mexico in 1966, He jinked one way, then the other, hit the ball and it was like a rocket until it hit the back of the net.
* John Barnes – His solo effort against Brazil, round three players, and round the keeper, to slot home.
* Glen Hoddle – The perfect chip against Bulgaria. On his debut to boot as well.
* Alan Shearer – Against Holland in Euro 1996, when we beat them 4 – 2, brilliant move with a superb finish into the top corner.
* David Platt - The most important and brilliant goal at a time when anything would have done. The volley against Belgium in 1990.
* Joe Cole – Against Sweden this last world cup. When he volleyed home from 35 yards.
* Kevin Keegan – Against Rep.Ireland, when he lobbed the keeper to send us through to the finals.
* Wayne Rooney – His first goal against Croatia – one two with Owen and a beautiful finish.

I'm not England fan, but my favorite is probably Charlton's second against Portugal in the 1966 semifinal that put England 2-0 up.
Long pass up to Hurst in the box, who controlled and protected it, bought time against his defender, then passed back softly to Charlton who hit it first time just inside the box.

"and that could be the goal that puts England in the final"

Another great goal was against Holland at Euro 96, I think it made the game 3-0. Where Gascoigne dribbled the ball towards the box, who I think laid it off to Sheringham for a good shot at goal - but instead of shooting when he had defenders in front of him, he laid the ball off to his right to Shearer, who blasted it into the net.

That goal was such an example of the team spirit that that team had. Mcmanaman talked about it in his book, that they performed so well in part because of the good team spirit off the pitch. That was the best I've seen England play in the last 20 years at least.

Mine is Gazza's against Scotland for the sheer significance, closely followed by Platt's v Belgium for the timing, Ian Wright scoring against Poland should also get a mention as should Shearer's goal mentioned above, all England's goals are great but to be honest they seem to mean less and less these days, overpaid twats.

I'll go for Gascoigne's goal against Scotland in '96. Not only a great goal, but a great goal celebration to boot :D A close second would be Owen's goal against Argentina in '98.

Bobby Charlton's vs Mexico in the 1966 group game....England had drawn the opener 0-0 vs Uruguay and were 0-0 vs Mexico when Charlton took over....that goal lifted the weight of expectation and allowed the team to gain confidence and really start to play.....hands down my favorite and probably Englands most important goal ever.....Just watched it again on youtube....hands down the winner.

Steve Bull?

Wasn't he playing in the old 3rd division or something like that?

When was the last time that happened - an England player playing for such a low-level league?

David Platt's 120th minute volley vs. Belgium in Italia 90 2nd round was quite nice.

That was Bull with the finish. At the time of that game Wolves were in the second division, but he made his debut whilst in the third division.
I think the last third division player to play for England before Bull was Peter Taylor in the 70s.
