do you guys think its possible that there could be a tampa team and a miami team? i think maybe later on, but it all depends how many teams the mls really wants. it would be neat, but im not so sure that it could happen. what do you guys think? just wondering:)

It would be great to have 2 teams but the way it looks now is that Miami might have a MLS team and Tampa/Clearwater will start out with a USL-1 team..but if Tampa/Clearwater get a USL-1 team before Miami get a MLS team and the popularity for soccer skyrockets in the area, I see Tampa beating out Miami for a MLS team

It's looking like there will finally be a team in the USL's home city? Wow.

Hadn't heard anything about the USL-1 team in Tampa/Clearwater. Can you point me to more info?

The Galactics Sports Complex is planned to be ready in 2010 with having a Pro team playing either in USL 1. Division or MLS.

That complex looks pretty nice, not quite Major League but could be expanded for MLS. Is Valderama a part of this or is he just a model?

The return of the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the Miami Fusion FC as MLS expansion teams would absolutely rock!

valderrama is one of the leading guys in this, apparently, a religious group in clearwater funds it, but the club itself is run by totally different people

Carlos Valderrama is a Club Director with the Clearwater Galactics club. A part-owner if you will. He is their big PR guy.

I also want to add, that those that went to the Galactics Tournament last week all told me they had a great time. About 5,000 showed up, which is fantastic.

And for the record, no religious group in Clearwater is funding the soccer club. Its a private business.

MOD NOTE

Can we leave religion out of the discussion? It is a sensitive subject for most people.

God Bless Valderrama!

I had to do it.

separation of soccer and religion. Tell this to these guys. "The Hand Of God Church" to honor Diego Armando Maradona. :D

Anyway, I do think that Florida can support 2 teams. Its the 3rd most populated state now. Large immigrant population. Tampa was well supported before they folded. Miami was poorly managed.

Miami had good support its last year, a lot better than most teams. And it won the supporters' shield. The Fusion should come back.

We have a possible stadium in Miami. We have a supposed stadium in Clearwater. We just might get two teams.

All we need is a SoB-type supporters group. :D

I think the problem with Miami is that they don't support any sports well. Plus, the minority population there is probably more into baseball than soccer(Cubans). Tampa has a little better chance of having a successful team. Plus, holy crap, if they had an academy going, they would within 5-10 years, be pumping out talent left and right. California, St. Louis, and Central Florida produce a higher quantity of high quality soccer players than anywhere else in the nation.

i agree, but you would think that cubans would be interested in baseball, but look at the marlins

The people of Miami can't help that two of their major sports owners, Jeffrey Loria and H. Wayne Huizenga, are utter @$$holes.

I'm really excited about the potential future MLS franchise in Miami. But do you think they are destined to return to Tampa? I'm just curious if they are willing to put a second expansion franchise in florida in maybe orlando or jacksonville. Although tampa has the bigger population, it also has to compete with many more sports franchises. Orlando only has basketball and Jacksonville only has football. Just curious what you guys think...:)

Never heard Tampa ever being mentioned by Don G. Would love it to happen, but I am doubtful.

i think first we need to get a team in Atlanta and a Florida team that will make a good rival for them. That will bring a lot of good attention to the southeast. And eventually add on another team in Florida and a team in Carolina. My hopes for a southern conference will look like this:

First Division
Atlanta Locomotives
Inter Miami
Florida Raiders (TB)
Carolina Airborne

2nd Division
Alabama Hearts (Birmingham)
Nashville Rangers
Memphis Rogues
New Orleans United
Charleston Battery
Ft. Lauderdale Fusion
Orlando Wonders
Puerto Rico Islanders
Virginia Beach Mariners
Charlotte Eagles
Richmond Kickers
Jacksonville Admirals

I made a list like that before. I think I was 13 or 14.
