We know that Philadelphia and St Louis are the great favourites about the 16th and 17th expansion teams.
In this moment can we say that New York City is the absolute favourite for 18th expansion team in MLS in 2010 ?

GO BOROUGH BOYS !!!!

i would think if we're not THE leading contender, we must be top 2 or 3 for basically all the reasons the don said in this year's state of the league address.

also, (and if this being repeated from someone else's point, i apologize.) but u put a stadium just feet away from flushing meadow park and u r guarenteed to attract many of the people who play futbol their every weekend. hell, maybe use the park to set up a youth academy. yea, we have to be one of the final two candidates for '10 at the latest. maybe if the Wipons r further along with plans than what's being said to the public, i could see us in the running for '09.

I have read the article of Kubah on your great blog about the death's group for expansion in 2010 and I think that if Wilpon will present a project for the stadium in the next months, we will be 100% the 18th MLS team in 2010 !!!
What is your opinion ?

in Kubah's latest blog about this, he said there's a new suitor from Miami.

really.........................?

the league is gonna try that market again. in florida, if it aint football(of the gridiron variety) then it don't exist. i really don't think it would b best to try top flight soccer in that state so soon. let miam fc do what they're doing, build up a bigger fan base and show they can support a team.

as for kc nearing the end of their fight for a new stadium, i gota admit that i also kinda saw a possible move from kc to nyc as a quick fix, but if it goes through for them, their fan base deserves it.

i still think that by 2010 in some order the new teams (besides seattle) will be nyc2, st.louis, philly. these r the three that seem to b furthest along in planning for a team infrastructure.

Garber often speaks cryptically to keep his options open, but I also thought he was pretty candid at the MLS Cup in saying that the league has eyed Philadelphia and a second New York team almost from the get go. Conversely, they do seem to fear that St. Louis doesn't have investors with deep enough pockets, which makes that expansion team far from a certain IMO.

If I was handicapping this, I think Philly and New York will be two of the final three teams, with the third either St. Louis or Montreal.

I think that St Louis is losing out as each day goes by because of a lack of a serious investor. Montreal gains ground because of the impact(no pun intended) that TFC has had. Then we throw Miami into the mix. Florida has just approved a 100 million tax plan to build a new baseball stadium along with a soccer stadium. So that being said, its going to be tough to beat MIAMI.

if there's one thing we can take from the chivas usa v. la galaxy games, even though chivas' regular season attendence wasn't that stellar this season those derby matches did have some excitemen. i think it would serve the league best to put a team somewhere there can already be some sort of built in rivalry between regions. for example:

nyc2 v. northeastern teams

philly v. northeastern teams

montreal/vancover v. tfc

portland v. seattle

st. louis v. midwestern teams

IMO picking from the left side of this list is what the league should do.

of course if they have their sh*t together in planning.

Miami can't support crap.
They couldn't do it the first time.
And they think the Cubans like soccer?
They have a baseball culture.
I just don't see Miami truly in the running yet.

They cant even sell out Dolphins games - the fans down there are so fairweather - Even the CANES - if you wathed thier games this year - empty - Miami does not have solid sports fans!

A struggling soccer team would not survive.

Stadium - all of a sudden - The Marlins have been trying since 93 to get a baseball stadium. What makes you think all of a sudden Miami is going to approve a soccer stadium!

If the Miami commissioners or whatever they are called, approve the 2 stadium package on Tuesday, and the baseball team approves it, then Miami #2 MLS will be in as soon as an ownership group is approved. Their chances look good.

So what does it mean to us? #1 Don't go out and get a NYC2 tattoo just yet. #2 We will have to compete with Filthy Philly and Steroid Louis for the last 2 spots.

Miami culd not support soccer the 1st time

It cant support Baseball

please why these jokers would get a spot B-4 NY is beyond me

RED $HIT NJ is going to play its exclusiveity rights card til 2010 maybe some 1 can throw money at that piece of garbage to let go of their exclusive rights to the region and let NY come in sooner rather than later......why bother being exclusive til 2010 when the fact is you could care less about NY and the reality that many NYers dont even want any part of your laughable marketing of a 5 dollar drink that trys to pass it self of as a soccer club..

They dont go over to see you at giants stadium and they wont see you at your fantasy you say you are building...

A few weeks ago things looked good for a NYC FC, but the past 2 weeks have not been good ones.

I am with QueensNick that I don't see Florida spending that type of money on sports stadiums. Where's the demand? Nick is right... FLA fans only show up for winners except for a few supporters that were probably born in the Northeast anyways. Keep in mind that FLA is notoriously cheap (people complain about taxes, but you get what you pay for and Floridians pay nothing in taxes).

Now if a stadium is approved by the end of the week, Miami is almost guaranteed to enter the MLS again. This is not St Louis... there is a ton of potential financial backers in FLA. The price is steep though ($50mil to finish the stadium, $30-40mil in franchise fees). THE MLS is already talking to Miami officials and have a list of potential suitors... check out this thread (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=634257).

But this works both way, if NYC announces that we are building a SSS you don't think the league will give us a team ASAP?

Kubah, I think that a decisive factor is the time ( November 2008 is less than 1 year.... ).
Is it possible for Borough Boys to meet a member of the Wilpon's family to explain them the enthusiasm that there is in many New Yorkers for a future soccer team in Queens ?
Are you still optimistic for the 2010 ?

I think the best thing that NYC FC supporters can do is organize under the Borough Boys and participate. Wilpon doesn't need someone telling him how to spend his money, but he will need united public support to get things done.

As QueensNick brought to my attention, the Mets (and Cyclones) had a Soccer Night last year and plan to do it again this year. They know that there is a demand. The Mets' marketing department probably has done all the research and if Wilpon is interested in the MLS it is because he feels that he can make it succeed.

What Wilpon does not have is the public outcry for redevelopment and a SSS/multi-purpose stadium. By organizing and getting the word out about a NYC FC we are helping show the city government what Wilpon's research probably already shows: New Yorkers want an MLS team with a stadium.

Are you still optimistic for the 2010 ?
It changes day-to-day.

There is much uncertainty and so little confirmed information that anything can happen. Who would have guessed that Miami would be in the picture a few weeks ago? Seattle came out almost nowhere too. I should put a "Chances of a NYC FC" meter on my blog... it will fluctuate more than the stock market.

For the record, I can't believe that after everything the Marlins, Dolphlins, and Hurricanes have had to do to get stadiums that an MLS stadium is just going to happen. Remember that Dolphin Stadium, where those 3 teams will play their 2008 season, was constructed without government money.

BTW, does anyone remember when the Marlins drew less than 400 fans (http://www.fishstripes.com/story/2007/9/13/84412/7218) for a game last season?

i didn't even know they had a soccer night (the mets) thats real cool... obvious if that's done again we have to go out in full force and see if we can buy a nut load of bleecher seats and go all out

Yea we def have to see when the official schedule comes out,but if this happens it will be a perfect game for us to attend.
