VILNIUS, July 28 (Reuters) - The death of Lithuanian striker Audrius Slekys will be marked by his Kaunas team mates before their Champions League second round qualifier against Celtic on Wednesday.
Slekys, who was 28, died on Sunday when he lost control of his car on a rural road and collided into a concrete water treatment facility. He was alone in the car.
Slekys was a five-times champion in the local premier league and had played in the Baltic state's under-21 and national squad.
"It is a great loss," Kaunas director Romualdas Kontrimas told Reuters on Monday.
"Audrius was the Lithuanian league's top scorer last year and among the top this year despite being out these two months with a broken toe," he said.
Kontrimas said that while Slekys would not have played in the tie against the Scottish premier league side, the tragedy would make it difficult for his team mates to focus on the game.
His funeral is set for Tuesday, while a minute's silence will be observed in Slekys's honour before Wednesday's match.
Celtic, last season's UEFA Cup finalists, are widely expected to see off Kaunas without great difficulty in the two legs this week and next.
